For my pedi rotation this semester I have to write a 5 page paper on a disease process/problem that has some chronicity requiring longer term care of the problem. Any ideas that would be interesting?

Specializes in ER.

Kawasaki's Disease is about a five pager. It can go either way so attentive nursing care is important, especially during assessment, as it can be diagnosed as a virus easily.

Spina bifida is a fascinating condition. I have a ten-year-old g-kid with a fairly severe case. I do think you would be wise to pick one aspect of the condition and concentrate on its effects over time.

Hydrocephalus and shunting--placement, complications, revisions--is one direction you could go in.

Arnold Chiari malformation of the brain (a co-malady sometimes seen in SB kids) is another.

Ortho, neuro, GI, pulmonary, and renal needs are still other possibilities.

You could choose any of the major body systems and relate how SB affects development and what types of needs and complications might present.

I wish you well with your project. Please let us know what you choose and how you are doing with it.

Specializes in Pediatrics- Adolescents.

Cystic fibrosis is definitely a good choice- lots of facets to it, as it affects many of the body systems.

CF is a good one. Asthma (could bring in smoke free environment) and diabetes would also be good choices. Congenital heart defects, maybe HLHS could work too. Hemophilia, sickle cell also good choices. The problem might come with your 5 page limitation.

Much luck---

Cindy
