New Hire Conundrum

Hello,

This is my first post and I seem to be in a situation. I just had a phone interview/screen with the nurse manager of the Peds Hem/Onc floor. She then told me to come in tomorrow for a panel interview with the other RN's on the unit.

Here is where the trickiness is. I ABSOLUTELY have a passion for Peds Hem/Onc and it is truly a DREAM job, but a couple weeks ago I accepted an offer at a different hospital in a regular adult tele unit. At that point I was already a month and half out of nursing school and was scared I would not get hired, especially by my dream job.

I am supposed to start orientation next week, but if I get offered this Hem/Onc position I will beat myself up if I don't accept it. How should I handle this situation? Should I tell the interviewers during the interview? Will that hinder my chances? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

As a Nurse Manager I would be disappointed that you backed out of the position you have already accepted but understanding. If you had started orientation it would be a different story and you probably would be marked as not eligible for rehire. My advice is take the position you want...worry about the rest later.

And I would not mention it to your interviewers. They do not need to know. If I am interviewing 2 people who have similar credentials and one tells me that they are backing out of a position that they already accepted then I will hire the other person.

My advice is to tell them you are considering a position at another facility so if they truly want you hopefully they will expedite the process. Otherwise onboarding can take weeks at some organizations.

The hiring process took more than four months at one of my employers. So mention that you are considering another option, hopefully to speed things up. But do not say you already accepted another job. They will just cross you off the list. You want to prevent that possibility.
