PCS orders Air Force Wife

Published

Hey all I was just wondering if anyone knew or has the hook up on some information for attaining employment in Misawa Japan as an LPN??

My husband just got orders and I'm concerned with being unable to acquire employment"/

Any information would be much appreciated!

Thank you

The first place would be usajobs.gov. Unfortunately, right now there is a hiring freeze. Do you have any experience? We had PCSed to Japan right after I passed NCLEX and wasn't qualified because I didn't have any experience. However, it never hurts to just go to the hospital/clinic and find out who the hiring manager is and see what they say. Good luck!

Specializes in NICU, High-Risk L&D, IBCLC.

Overseas employment is extremely difficult for experienced nurses and next to impossible for new graduates. You could always arrange contacts with the medical facility at Misawa Air Base to get started and to see exactly what you are up against. Otherwise, I would highly recommend continuing your education and planning on not working for the duration of your husband's tour. Volunteering on base is also a good way to get your foot in the door, but with the current state of defense spending, you may not see an open position for a long time. Best of luck to you!

True thanks you I'll make sure to do that! As of right now I have no experience but by the time we leave I will hopefully have about 6 months under my belt, not to mention that I was a tech and CNA for almost 2 years! I guess we'll see what happens!

Thank you! I was considering just continuing my education through Excelsior it's the only LPN to RN school over there... Any advice about them? I just don't want to put my whole life on freeze again and let my license go to waste.!

I don't know if you have any previous degrees , but if you plan on getting your ADN or BSN, I would use this time to complete classes online for your bachelors (so your humanity, social science, and elective courses). My fiancée is Air Force too and I dread thinking about going overseas just because it is harder to find work (and I am working my butt off for this degree! Lol). Enjoy Japan, I've heard it's beautiful!

Thanks so much...!! I have researched Japan a lot and have become very excited about moving over there..! I have my LPN and all my gen Ed classes needed for my RN however, the only LPN to RN program that I can do over there seems to be through excelsior..! Which I've heard good and bad things about so we'll see"/

I was stationed at Misawa a few years back and it is a very small hospital. You may be able to get a job in one of the clinics. It just depends on what job openings there are. There are no other applicants to choose from other than the spouses so it might not be as bad as you think....timing and luck.
