Lori, my family moved to Charleston, SC ten years ago from Beverly, MA. I have to tell you that after ten years I'm finally making what I earned at Salem Hospital when I left! I work for Roper St. Francis Healthcare which is comprised of Roper Hospital and St. Francis Hospital and all their free standing facilities. The other major employer, in the area, is the Medical University Hospital. All facilities are always hiring but there is no major shortage. Staffing is quite good.
Charleston is a beautiful city but don't be fooled into believing it's inexpensive to live here. Yes, car insurance and property taxes are lower but food and clothing cost the same and they are all subject to a 6% sales tax. Housing is expensive although less than in the North. Public education is sorely lacking in comparison to MA so you might want to consider private schools if you have school-age children. I too worked at Salem Hospital (Now North Shore Medical Center) for 15 years in the OR. We are now looking in the Conway SC area. It is very nice and the property is inexpensive. We can sell our home here in Peabody, MA and have a VERY SMALL mortgage and a very large house with lots of land. This winter was VERY tough. We got to -15 below zero. So we're packing up when we can find a house and/or land. Taxachusetts is getting too expensive!! Thanks for the reply on Charleston. We may look there as well. Do you have an accent yet? Or still have that Bawston accent??

Sorry, I can't help you out at all with pay info for LPN's. We actually have very few LPN's in the hospital where I work. Most of them went back to school, at the local two year college, and became RN's.

I worked in downtown Charleston for 10 yrs. and loved the teaching hospital
(MUSC).
I am now living on the outskirts of Myrtle Beach. We moved here several years ago, and if I had to do it all over again I would have stayed inthe Charleston area.
I do like the upstate also..Greenville is a nice area and growing rapidly.
They have lots of medical positions around that vacinity. Im sure Columbia does also. If you need any other info, feel free to send me a message.
I live in Upstate SC. I am not sure what RNs in your area with experience would make, but I know nurses with 15 years experience in nephrology nursing that make close to $ 30.00 an hour in the hospitals around here. I hope this helps. Good luck on your move. :balloons:
I' m looking to relocate to SC soon and was wondering if anyone can give me an idea on the pay scale. I'm a registered nurse and have 15 years exp in OR nursing and 3 years in Corrections nursing. I know the pay will be less than the Boston area but I want to find out before selling the home and moving the family away. Any part of SC is OK. Any good Hospitals or ones to stay away from? I forgot to mention Correctional Nursing doesn't pay that good here. It has been since 1995 since I did it, but I was making 27,500/ year , maybe that will help.
I relocated to the Myrtle Beach area last summer from Salem Mass. with 22 years experience in rehabilitation nursing I found it very difficult to find day &/or evening employment, unlike the Boston area the newspapers here consistantly have only 1-3 postings for RNs and the pay is pitiful (
Friend wants to move to SC to be close to son and grandkids. Conway area. She is an experienced nurse, pushing 60, and is having trouble finding a position. She says age is against her. Any suggestions?
The allnurses job board seems rife with dialysis and travel. But there are a couple of small town hospitals above and below Conway that don't advertise here,
I'm thinking Surfside, Georgetown, Myrtle Beach, Bennetsville, Bishopville, Florence all have acceptable health care. She may have to write or visit each one. Does she already live her or would she qualify for a moving bonus?
Put in your info and you should get a pretty good idea. All hospitals pay differently, all schedule differently and certainly all benefits are different.
