Pay rate

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I'm totally new to this, as I gradute this December with my BSN. Anyway, I just had my very first RN interview for the New Grad program at Mayo. I was told the pay rate after passing NCLEX and up to the first year was $28.39 and then it bumps up to just $29.09 after that first year.

My question is, does this sound low??? I havn't been able to get salary ranges out of anyone so far, but was hoping I'd be making more than $30 an hour at least. Any thoughts??? Do you think that any other hopitals pay new grads better? And if I get offered a position, should I try to bargain for more money? I have 2 Bachelor's degrees and some graduate work in another field already. Help! Thanks:D

I think you are extremely fortunate in this market to get any job offers. I don't think it is low compared to other hospitals. I would be jumping at that job.

i hate to take the bait, but seriously.... see the above quote? dorimar did answer your question. nobody, NOBODY, made any comment to you about the pay rate, they commented on how we should be making much more. you are overly defensive and seem to lack reading comprehension skills, and are making snide comments about this thread in other threads. really??? nobody was against you, but you somehow managed to turn a very valid question and discussion on pay into an argument. if you don't want people "butting into" your threads, please reconsider posting on public forums. your intentions, maturity, and attitude are very transparent. i think the majority of us are done here.

Mayo pays well. You are lucky.

Thank you, very much, MsBruiser! I am thankful to have found a good job, even before graduating:yeah:.

You really are...Mayo is a very civilized place to work. Unlike most other hospitals. Once you come here, it is pretty tough to go anywhere else. Competition was very, very fierce. So despite your hard work - a little luck doesn't hurt! What unit will you be working on?

Or rather, shoot me a PM with your unit...

Mayo is not a bad place to work. I believe they have a pension plan too, so don't

discount that benefit. The only other employer with a pension plan is federal, state,

or CHW hospitals (I think.)

Pension plans were good years ago but the last few years were a brutal surprise to retirees. When the going gets tough pensions get underfunded. And when it really hits the fan the government steps in to cover it with pennies on the dollar.

You can always annuitize existing retirement monies for income needs during retirement. Lots of smart retirement gurus out there. I like Ray Lucia's Buckets of Money approach.
