Pay per encounter or hourly?

So I just informally accepted a part-time job doing H&Ps and medical consults for a behavioral health facility. They are offering pay either hourly or per encounter. I've calculated it out and to come out better per encounter, total time including documentation for H&Ps needs to be under 50 min and my consults under 44 min. I've never worked with behavioral health patients as a nurse practitioner before, although the complaints I'll be addressing are strictly medical and for the H&Ps are things like hyptertension, diabetes, etc., and for the consults, sore throats, stuffy noses, injuries, etc. The only work I've done as a nurse practitioner so far has been occupational health physicals and clearance exams, so I'm still very new as far as true medical care goes. What do you think?

Yeah they are lowballing you bad that's almost RN wages since they are not paying any of the taxes federal tax income tax state tax social security Medicare tax they are not paying any of those taxes. You need to ask for the 75 per hour or per encounter. Just curious what state is this? you're better off getting your own malpractice policy especially when you talk about the coverages and if you have to buy a tail policy.

I'm moving and this job will be in Texas, but it seems like most of the jobs are in this pay range. I'm also doing VA assessments for $56.32/hr. But as far as malpractice, all the 1099 jobs that I have talked with potential employers about offer malpractice so I thought that was expected!

ETA I'm making $85/hr now at a part-time occ health assessment job that requires travel, but everyone acts like that's ridiculously high when I tell them.

I have 4 part time jobs, 2 I am considered employee so W2. 2 I am a 1099 independent contractor. No benefits at any job. I carry my own malpractice, even if employer buys one but in that case they should not be taking in out of your salary. What city in Texas are you moving to? Im a UTEP grad. I'm also looking at doing disability assessments for the VA but they pay per the type of exam as a 1099. The $85 per hour is good rate. Do not take anything less then $60 per hour as W2 & nothing less then $70 per evaluation or per hour as 1099. In New Mexico on top of paying federal/state/medicare & social security tax, I also have to pay gross receipts tax of 8% on anything I earn as a 1099. Except if I have NTTC (non-taxable transaction certificate which I have from one 1099 job). PM me if you have questions. Unfortunately I did not know any of this when I first graduated. The Gross Receipts tax, a few NP's including myself got hit for back taxes by the state of New Mexico. I used to do my own taxes until last years, now have accountant. He charged $350 this year to do my taxes, well worth it.

$85/hr is respectable especially if you're working 2000 hrs/yr. Turn that into a full time slot.
