Pay to park?

Published

I have worked at the same hospital (excuse me, Medical Center) for nearly 15 years. I have been an RN for nearly 26 years. The Medical Center where I am employed charges us to park. As much as 500 dollars per year, depending on the area you are assigned/request to park in.

Does anyone else out there have to pay to park to go to work?

I mean the hospital built the parking deck(s) due to a lack of space in the area and they do provide a "free" parking area, but it requires a 5 min. walk to get from the free area to the hospital or a ride on a provided shuttle bus, if you work the "right" hours.

But really, do you think you should have to pay to park where you work?

I don't agree with it, but then, I'm not about to walk a half mile to the "free" lot when I get off work at 11pm.

Specializes in med/surg.

We pay $4 a week to use the attached ramp and I love it. No more half mile walks through snow and rain or worries about being mugged. My car will be in the shade all day and not be broiling in the summer or have to scrape the snow and ice off in winter.

Specializes in NICU Level III.

I used to work in the Tx Medical Center and it's 10 bucks a day for that.

Specializes in Happily semi-retired; excited for the whole whammy.

Some of the hospitals here have needed to get creative about parking options for employees, because space is just at such a premium. One of the hospitals pays employees $5 a day to park offsite and take the shuttle in. I believe that all the hospitals who have employees parking in overflow lots provide security escorts past a certain hour, though.

The university owns the parking lots. If there is a basketball game employees can't park in the lots they have paid to park in if the lots are near the basketball stadium. The university will direct us to different parking areas on game nights. Level I basketball outranks essential employees paying >$250 a year to park in a lot a 10min walk away. Same rules apply for football season.
