Paramedic to ER Traveler

Published

Hey! I was just wondering if travel companies would accept two year experience as a paramedic when considering me for a travel nursing job. Or should I work as a tech in the ER while I work on my RN?

Your paramedic will definitely be a plus....but the responsibilities as a medic and a nurse are very different (I have been both as well). They will probably want one year working as an RN before traveling...but I am sure there are companies that will find that sufficient. I would work as a medic in an ED or a CNA in an ED to get the ED exposure AND foot in the door as a new grad.

You are in nursing school? Yes, you need to stay put.

If you are asking if working as a paramedic or an ER tech can make up for a lack of experience as an RN on a resume, yes it is helpful. But you will probably not get offered a travel assignment without RN experience. And if you get less than a year on a staff job, that will not look good on a resume either.

I know how cocky paramedics are (no offense intended at all), but you will find that being an RN takes an entirely different perspective you will need to live in for a while for it to fit. It is similar to the gap between an EMT and a paramedic. Get it?
