U.S.A. California

Hello,

I have an employment offer from Paradise Valley Hospital in National City, San Diego area.

Could anyone give an opinion on the hospital itself, the area, and the cost of living?

We are a young family of 3 including a 10-month-old.

Thank you.

Hi,

I live in San Diego, and although I am not familiar with the Paradise Valley Hospital in National City, I am familiar with the general area. I have a co-worker/friend who lives in National City, and unfortunately I would just not recommend the area. She is a nurse's aide, and has been living there for several years because of the low cost of living, but over the past couple of years she has had to put bars over her windows (literally--I am not joking or making fun of her--she is genuinley afraid), and she has been unable to sell her house. Her home has been broken into a few times, and she has a cute white fence around her house which, every time she repaints, gets vandalized. It's really a shame, and I feel so bad that she goes through all of this.

I do not know if there are different areas of National City, and perhaps she lives in the lower end area, but she has been trying to sell her home, and so has another neighbor of hers on the same street, and nothing will sell. I really mean no disrespect to anyone who might live in National City --I speak only from the experience my friend has been going through for almost 2 years now. That is what leads me to recommend against moving to National City, despite the low cost of living, especially since you have a baby.

There is an area not too far from NC called Chula Vista, which is a big area, extremely diverse in its cost. Although there are some extremely expensive areas of Chula Vista, there are also (or at least there were about a year or 2 ago) several very affordable areas, which would probably be much safer than National City. Again, I haven't looked at places to live for 1 or 2 years, so if the prices have sky-rocketed, I do apologize for the recommendation. But don't give up if you see just a few expensive places in that area--keep searching and you might find something nice at a good price. Good luck to you!!

Hi NurseNSooth,

It would be very easy to work at Paradise Valley Hosp. and live in a different area of San Diego. I myself wouldn't want to live in National City, but there is a huge variety of nice, safe neighborhoods within 20 minutes of Paradise Valley. KLeigh is right - lots of good options in Chula Vista.

Good luck to you!

oh, thank you all very much indeed.

I live about 2 miles from Paradise Valley in military housing and right on the main street outside of our community new townhomes and apartments are being built. The local government is doing a lot to revamp the area and so far so good. I have been here for almost three years and haven't heard much for major or even serious crime in the area. Really National City can't hold a stick to the crime in other California cities I've lived. It's really not bad, it is an underserved and underrepresented area with a lot of immigrants and minorities that gives it the stigma of being crime ridden. When I first got to San Diego, the only shooting and hopefully the last I'll ever witness in my life was in the historic Gas Lamp Quarter of "America's Finest City." It's not a bad place to live, there are communities like Bonita, Eastlake, Otay Ranch that are really nice suburbia less than 5 or 6 miles south. There are nice neighborhoods to be found in each community, knowing what I know now, I think I would chose a community in a nice area that was opposite the traffic congestion in the direction I most traveled. In the morning it takes me almost 25 minutes to get to school, not bad but it's 3 exits away! If I were coming from the other direction, 7 minutes. By the way we have a 15 month old daughter so I know your concerns of safety.
