Paper Oasis in 24hrs

Published

We were told today that we MUST hand in our written Oasis within 24 hours. I said that is why we need computers. Was told that was mentioned but not in the near future. Some nurses do all paperwork on the weekends. I am new to HH and have bad handwriting. This will make more nightly homework.

Medicare requires all OASIS to be completed in 5 days. Our agency requires it to be turned in for utilization review in 24 hours. I usually have no problems doing this but might if I had to do paper, but we have computer charting.

I would not have a problem IF I had a computer. When I started and asked about computers they said well IF we had computers you would have to send it within 24 hours. Well now they want Oasis in have not mentioned the nursing notes for other visits yet.

I've always been required to turn in OASIS within 24 hours and never had a problem with it. I don't understand what takes people so long, really, but that's just me. I once did 8 SOCs and 4 or 5 visits in a weekend and had everything turned in complete on Monday morning. :shrug

This is where you evaluate if home care is the specialty for you. Due to reimbursment, it is imperative that the OASIS is submitted, reviewed and locked for the RAP. The review is to make sure the diagnosis and plan of care are appropriate.

In some cities, there is such a saturation of home health agencies that another company can admit the same patient and drop a RAP before you get your OASIS submitted. This happens because the patient doen't tell the clinician that a nurse has opened the case or the clinician may open it anyway, submit via the computer and let the office now that another agency was there. The office will drop that RAP in a second versus saying oh well, we can't open the case because it was opened this morning by a different agency.

The paperwork never ends in homecare. i always try to eliminate the extra paperwork for field staff such as forms created by internal staff just to make a step of their jobs easier.

As far as homecare software goes, some programs are very cumbersome for field staff, ie flipping through many screens just to comple a visit note. Some are very direct-fill in the blanks. Suggest to the person deciding on software that they allow some field staff in for the demos. Homecare JHomebase is good. You use a smart phone with that one. Kinnser is good and it's web based. You can log in from any computer.

I wish you well. I love home care but the paperwork can be a big burden. You're tired from seeing patients all day and then have paperwork at home. Always finish charting in the home so that you can go home and not have much to do. Make yourself turn in paperwork daily or at least finish it daily.

This is where working for a Medicaid only agency has an advantage. Our funding has nothing to do with what is on Oasis. The Oasis is required by the state but has nothing to do with Medicaid reimbursement. It is only a required nuisance for us.
