For my RN-to-BSN class I have to write a letter to a politician expressing my view on a political issue which impacts nursing and the current healthcare system. Anyone have any good issues or know of a place where I can access some of these issues??? I looked at my state (PA) nurse association website and I have to pay in order to view this area (which I won't do). Thanks for any assistance!

I did mine on cuts to hospice - look at your state chapter of whatever area of nursing you have some interest in and read about some of the issues facing specific areas, so it isn't too broad.

There's usually some legislation on the table about increasing the school nurse ratio. Right now it is 1:1500. Been that way since 1948.

Seems Like I remember learning at an epidemiology conference a couple of years back that PA had just passed legislation requiring mandatory MRSA screening for healthcare workers. I asked the speaker what was the point in such a law, what were the consequences and what was to happen with those that came back positive.... she didn't have any answers.

are you seriously having trouble finding a current political issue that impacts nursing and the current healthcare system? dude, turn on the tv and switch over to fox cnn etc....wait 5 minutes and an idea should come to you. don't want to pay for cable, try the rabbit ears and go to a local news outlet.
not that writing letters actually accomplishes anything. the few that i have sent are all answered by some low level retard that is programmed to copy and paste from a selection of soothing responses informing the concerned voting citizen how hard the addressed politician is working on my issue. meanwhile, the addressed politician is using my letter as rolling paper for some primo grade california grown reefer and utilizing my tax money to stock the liquor bar on their private taxpayer funded gulfstream g250 enroute to get the latest upgrade in botox therapy.

The current healthcare reform agenda should be enough to keep you busy. You can drill down to a specific issue within the health care reform debate that interests you.
