Panel Interview- Your opinion greatly appreciated

Published

Hello,

I am new grad who just had a 6 person panel interview and would appreciate your feedback, please! I was very nervous and not sure how I came across. I believe that I did well with the patient care questions, but I feel I was lacking in the critical thinking department because I failed to answer the critical thinking questions thoroughly. I'm not the kind of person who is good at answering on the fly. The nurse manager said they will be making a decision by tomorrow. Since they are deciding so quickly, should I bother to mail out thank you notes since they will get them after a decision has been made or should I send them anyway?

What has been your experience during interviews? Did you excel in one area and lack in another but still get the job? I really emphasized that I was a team player, worked well with others, and went above and beyond for my patients? Would that help make up for the incomplete critical thinking answers? I made them laugh several times if that is a plus! I'm sick to my stomach thinking I messed this up because who knows when I will get another opportunity.

Please comment and I would appreciate any advice for the future as well. Thank you so much for reading my post. :)

PatteRN, Thank you sooo much for your post! I hope you hear good news. Please keep me posted. As you said, one day (I hope sooner than later) we will be working :nurse:. We'll look back on this experience and laugh (well, maybe not). This experience builds character and it will certainly make me appreciate my job. Good luck!!

I also didn't get it =(. Took it kind of hard....but trying to stay positive. On to the next one!

Always send out the thank you notes. Do it because it's the right thing to do. But also because you just never know what might happen. Maybe next week the applicant they selected will find out her husband is getting transferred and she won't be able to continue. Maybe someone else will give notice and they'll need a second hire. Maybe you'll see one of the six people on the panel in another situation. Even if they don't remember, you will, and you'll feel better for having taken care of this bit of workplace etiquette.

To all of you who are still job-hunting, I hope you find something soon.

PatteRn, So sorry to hear your news. I know exactly how you feel. I have had 2 more email rejections as well, so it was not a good week. I just sigh, delete/forget them and move on. Keep you chin up, we didn't make it this far and end up not getting a job. It WILL happen!!! ;)

RN/Writer, Thanks for your pep talk! :) Even though I feel silly since I did not get the job, I know I did the right thing by sending the notes and I took the high road instead of the pity-party road. I really hope something comes soon since the student loan "payment due" letters are arriving. I know I can get an extension, but that is just putting a band-aid on a gushing $40K wound. On my bad days, the investment doesn't seem worth it. Thanks again!

Get the extension. Then pay sooner when you get a job.

The last thing you need right now is to worry about loan payments when you have no income. This isn't a sign of defeat. It's a sign of taking care of yourself so you don't end up in financial hot water. The loan companies know the score. They've seen the job desert out there. Better to communicate with them and defer the payments than miss deadlines and add bad credit to your woes.

Keep on keeping on. This too shall pass.

panel interviews make me nervous

RN/Writer and Royal Nurse, Thanks for the posts. I am going to get an extension on my loans, but I have been putting it off hoping I would get a job. Getting an extension would kinda mean I have lost hope. I wish I would have graduated back in 2007 when things were much better. Oh well, have a great weekend!!:)
