Pace University BSN/MA- Westchester, Spring 2010

Published

Hello all!

Has anyone applied to Pace University's combined degree program in Westchester for this coming Spring? I just applied and I am anxiously awaiting my acceptance or rejection notice. I haven't taken the GRE yet (will do in August).

If anyone feels comfortable sharing their GRE scores or GPA, and whether or not they were accepted, I would be really appreciative.

Also, maybe if I get accepted, we could start getting to know each other before the semester starts.

Good luck to all!

Thanks! If you don't mind telling me , what was your undergraduate gpa and gre score before getting in. I have a 3.18 gpa for a BA in biology. Iam taking my GRE this friday, do you think I should wait for my score back before I sent in the grades to pace?

Thanks for you time! =)

My undergrad was 3.8

GRE math:660

verbal:570

I think it is ok to send grades in, GRE will send score directly to them.

My undergraduate GPA was a 4.0, actually, but my GRE scores weren't so fabulous. I can't recall exactly, but they were around 1000, maybe 1050. They really look at your grades in the prerequisite classes. Try to get A's and B's in them. That makes a really big difference. When you take the GRE's, you see your scores right away... then you decide if you want them sent to the school.

Thanks!! Good Luck this year!

You're welcome. I was just speaking to a classmate yesterday who is in the 1-year program who said her undergrad grades were just a 3.0, but she got A's in her prerequisite classes and did really well on the Miller Analogies Test which is the other test you can take if you don't want to take the GRE.

It good to here I still have a chance :)

My prereqs are decent with A's and B's ... i just got a C+ in general chem :(

But I took organic chemistry 1 and 2 got an A and B. I also to biochemistry .... But I don't know if they consider that a plus after that C+.

PS. What loans did federal loans cover most of the tuition?

They don't want to see C+'s in anything in the prereq's but perhaps the Organic Chem will help. I really don't know. I'm only in my second semester of part time study. The total amount of tuition I've paid out has been $12,000 and Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans have covered all of it so far. I don't know what will happen in the Fall. Pace has zero institutional financial aid which really stinks.

Honestly, I don't think they care about Cs or C+s in prereqs -- I had a C+ in one of my prereqs (but As in the others, including A&P 1 and 2, which I took online). I think they look more at your overall resume. I had a lot of outside work in a medical office, references from nurses, etc. My GREs were pretty high (1400, I think), but my college GPA was really not that great (3.1), although I did have a year of graduate school with a 3.9, and a semester at another school with a 3.85. I would apply, and if you don't get in, it's okay - there are tons of other options! :)

I really think that Pace looks at the person overall and will not see a C and just dismiss your application (especially in a hard course). However, Pace's combined degree program is extremely difficult. I'm in the one year CDP, and we've lost about 10 people (at least) from it so far. It's very demanding, and they are completely inflexible with grading (one girl got booted for being a point below the requirement in one course). I would highly suggest applying to a variety of schools, there are a few in the area. Make sure you really know what you're getting into before you decide to come here! That being said, I feel like I've learned so much more than I thought would have been possible in only a few months, and from what we've heard their passing rate (for those who make it through) on the NCLEX is very high.

Good luck!!!

Agreed. I got a C+ in A&P I and applied to the one year program but was accepted into the 2 year program. When I asked, I was told that although my undergrad performance was stellar, the prereq's and the GRE scores both had some blemishes. They said, had my GRE scores been great, they would have outweighed the C+ in A&P I and vice versa. I guess what I mean is that the prerequisites and the GRE's count for more than I expected they would. I almost think they counted for as much or more than the performance in the undergraduate degree... but it's one big picture, I agree. Also I had stellar resume, but in business... completely unrelated to health care.

How likely is to for someone to get kicked out of the program?

Has anyone been kicked out yet and if so do they eventually get reaccepted?

I don't go to Pace but for most nursing programs in general, one you are kicked out/dismissed from a program they will not even allow you to reapply for the nursing program and you will find difficulty with another school wanting to take you as well.

The possibility of being kicked out is very real. I'd say at least ten people out of 60 (which is about the total number of people in the one year and two year programs combined) were dismissed from the program last semester... either mid way thru the semester when it was evident that they weren't going to do well enough to recover from a bad exam grade or after finals. If your GPA falls below a 3.0, or if you get more than one C+ (which is an 80), or if you get below a C+ (76), they kick you out. You can appeal, but it is unlikely that you will be reaccepted. I don't know why they have that policy, but it is on everybody's mind all the time. It's not like you have to be this big loser who doesn't work hard and blows it off or anything. A 76 in one class is all you need to be dismissed and it is not that unusual. It's kinda sad, really, because the people who were dismissed last semester were obviously smart people who blew one exam and just couldn't recover.
