Owens - anyone know what's happening?

U.S.A. Ohio

I heard last week about Owen's loosing their accreditation.

I'm currently working on prereqs, so I haven't been too concerned about it...yet. But I'm wondering if anyone has any info/updates they can share. I need to rethink things for the spring semester (my final two prereqs) and beyond if it's not looking like their accreditation will be reinstated. Even if they do get it reinstated, I'm furious that students STILL have not been notified (at least not those of us that are pre-nursing - not sure about those in clinicals)...makes me question whether I WANT to continue on there (financially though, it may be all I can afford. :o)

Also, does anyone know what impact this will really have on students? I've heard that graduates will still be able to sit for boards, but that credits may not transfer to other schools; I've also heard that graduates would NOT be able to sit for boards. What is the full impact of this on students graduating during the period that they are not accredited?

I haven't called the school yet, I figure those that were due to graduate this year are the ones that need to be receiving attention from the advisors. I can wait.

Good luck to everyone hanging in limbo right now!!

The way I understand it is that you can still go there and take your nursing classes and take the NCLEX and get your license...BUT if you want to further your education and get your BSN that's where you are likely to have problems.

A lot of schools will not recognize your nursing classes from a school that is not accredited. So you will be stuck starting over or keep looking for a school that will take your credits.

I know BG's website specifically states that you must be a graduate of an acredited diploma or associates program. UT's website doesn't say anything one way or the other, but it's been my experience that UT is a little bit more stringent w/ their pre-reqs than BG (as far as math and sciences go) so I can't imagine that they would take a non-acredited program if BG doesn't. Lourdes doesn't say one way or the other either. Mercy's website says that they have to be "regionally accredited" and i'm not sure if that is different from the national accrediation that Owens lost.

I took my pre-reqs at Owens and then decided to transfer to Mercy for fall. Now i'm REALLY glad i did it this fall instead of waiting a semester because it sounds like there are a ton of Owens students that want to come in at Mercy in the fall and I imagine there is going to be one heck of a waitlist.

It's the National League of Nursing Accreditation that Owens lost because not enough Masters' prepared instructors and not enough student involvement in policy, etc. Most schools will accept Owens grads to BSN programs, and as an Owens student, I received an e-mail about 2 schools out of all the nursing schools in OH (

Ohio State being one) that will not accept a student not from NLN accredited school. Funny thing is, there are

many different groups of accreditation, and BON ultimately has say, and Owens is fine in this way. As was said by Dept of Nursing that if students not told about this, most wouldn't even know, as wouldn't be affected even if

going on. I plan to go to BSN program the Fall after I graduate (I'll be done Dec 2010) and after getting the REAL

FACTS and not listening to the craze of student talking, I am very glad to be at Owens.

I do have to say, graduated from LPN program in Dec 08, just before started RN in Jan 09, so I'm in my second

semester RN. The LPN program I'm SOOOO thankful I completed because the education I got from that (at OWENS) is worlds apart from the quality of education I'm getting from the RN program. The RN program is too big, many of the instructors (esp in skills lab first semester) are "separate" from students, and just overall I'm not learning anything near the quality of the LPN. Overall though, I think the program is okay, it's just that I did the LPN and so see the potential of nursing education, so yes disappointed. I keep waiting, like, maybe haha NEXT semester going to get better...
