I am new to gyne nursing and am wondering if anyone has heard of constipation due to ruptured ovarian cyst (confirmed via translady partsl ultrasound). I have always been under the impression that this was a symptom very specific to ovarian cancer. What pathologically would cause absent BMs and/or constipation after a cyst or ruptured cyst, and does this warrant further investigation? Or is it appropriate to advise patients to take stool softeners and "wait it out"?
An acute abdomen from any cause can cause constipation because of the inflammatory effect on the bowel and/or pelvic nerve plexus. As far as advising a patient to wait it out, take laxatives, or seek more urgent care- I would leave that decision up to the provider.
