We've lost 2 precious angels recently, including one that I was attached too pretty strongly...and we have a gaggle remaining that are circling the drain. It's been a rough 4-5 days around my unit.

As always, the post-mortem care/bath reminded me of the special nature of what we do. Not just anyone can bathe that precious dead baby. Or unhook that ET Tube and turn off that ventilator. It's an honor to be allowed to do it...to pay that last little bit of respect for that sweet angel.

Imagine my dismay this morning, 30 minutes before getting off, when my 800 gram 23 weeker self-extubated and it took us nearly an hour to get her reintubated while her heart rate and sats continued to fall through the floor while we were bagging her and trying the tube!

Thank you Jesus for that co2 detector finally turning yellow, and the baby finally turning pink. When I left, she was lying there pretty, pink and comfortable while I walked to the car with my nerves shot.

Haha.

Some of them are quite a handful to be so little, aren't they? (I don't work nicu. I work peds med/surg. My own kids were SCN babies.)

And needing a whole new set of scrubs and undies? I would. Takes a while to stop quivering as well.
