I was just accepted into the OU BSN TCC Collaborative program for Fall '08 (where you take your junior level classes at TCC then transfer to OU for your senior year). I was more nervous than I can tell you about getting in because I heard such grim probabilities, people constantly getting rejected year after year, etc. So, a LOT of weight off my chest!
I'm posting to see if anyone has ever gone through the TCC Collaborative program from OU and if you have any advice, helpful tips, books, anything that could help. I'm not looking for a handout but if you've got any advice I'd definitely be grateful :):bowingpur

I attend OU and know a few people that have been in the collaborative program. Since they attend OU their senior year, I have gotten to know a few. I will ask them what they think when I see them on Monday night.
I will tell you what I do know. They said that sometimes it is difficult to get answers. This is a new program - I think that you will be in the 3rd class. I know that the collaborative students are represented on the University of Oklahoma Student Nurses Association, they have 2 representatives. So, if you want that sort of leadership, you can do that. Classes are taught at TCC by I want to say, OU instructors. I know your pharm instructor was my pharm instructor. But they have to say that they really like paying TCC tuition!!!! I wish I had that
Sorry I don't really have more info, but I will get back to you on Monday night.

Hi Sam,
I just found out I was accepted to this program as well. I'm really excited! I've heard that we will be at the SE campus...I've been taking some of my prerequisites out at the SE campus and I've been pretty impressed with the facilities so far, especially the nursing lab. Well, I'm sure I'll see you around! Good luck! :)

How cool is this! I didn't know TCC offered that! How does it work? Are you actually in the same classes as the TCC nursing program students or is it separate? How many levels of the program do you take at TCC before moving over to OU?? This is great! Would love more info.
The program is actually instructed by OU professors, so I am told, but at the TCC price (roughly 1/3 of the OU cost). And I do not believe that we share courses with the TCC ADN program students, but I could be *completely* wrong. We will know on May 9 when the tradition collaborative open house is held, I'll def post about the details so people will know :) I do know that we only attend our junior level classes at TCC but we are actually students of the OU health sciences center and all that technical blah. I'm scared about cost of books, cost of uniforms...COST OF EVERYTHING lol. Does anyone have any tips on what books we really need?
And Jessica, I was told that we would be attending the Metro Campus? Not sure but I know that two classes are offered mostly online with labs in class. I know a few people at TU, are you a sophomore there?
Sam,
I was told by the OU Tulsa office that we would be at the SE campus, but I guess we will find out on May 9th! :) I haven't seen any students in OU scrubs at the SE campus this semester, so we might be at the Metro campus.
I graduated from TU in 2005 with business degree. I decided to quit my job in human resources last year to go back to school to become a nurse. I'm glad all of my prerequisites will be done in a week and I can finally start nursing school!

I am in the CBSN program and I can explain it for anyone interested...there has only been two classes (including mine) go through this new (and VERY disorganized program)....
I will say there are PLUSES and MINUSES...but basically, you take your jr. year OU courses (not TCC--we are not affliated with the TCC nursing program) at TCC for TCC prices and then your sr year is strictly at OU. ALL coursework is the EXACT same as OU (including exams---OU does the same exams across the board at all campuses, including OU-Tulsa, OU-OKC, Lawton, etc).
Basically, you are taking OU classes at TCC campus..MOST of our instructors ARE TCC instructors however, except our pharmacology teacher who is from OU.
Here are the PLUSES (in my opinion):
**Pay TCC prices for OU classes (You do your financial aid through OU however).
**EXCELLENT INSTRUCTORS--HOW ABOUT THE BEST INSTRUCTORS! They REALLY care about the students and work HARD with you and really get to know you on a PERSONAL level. I have many friends at OU that do not have the same feelings toward the instructors there.
**SMALL class size (We have 18) vs. 60-ish at OU-Tulsa right now. Again, you get the one-on-one with the instructors who really care and you get a lot more hands on clinical experience/lab.
**WE STICK TOGETHER! haha, we are so small that we have to, nobody is "catty" and we all try to help eachother out which is GREAT, and NEEDED in NS.
I'm sure there is more pluses but this is just what instantly comes to mind...
MINUSES:
OU AND TCC ARE THE MOST DISORGANIZED SCHOOLS EVER! OKAY, IF I COULD MAKE THAT HUGE AND BOLD I WOULD...THE PROGRAM IS SO DISORGANIZED, BASICALLY, CLASSES START LATE, OU DOESN'T TELL TCC WHATS GOING ON..WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO FOR CLASSES, WE HAVE TO WAIT AROUND FOR OU TO SEND THE SYLLABI TO OUR INSTRUCTORS...JUST IMAGINE A TEACHER TRYING TO TEACH ANOTHER TEACHER'S POWERPOINTS/EXAMS/ETC...AND THINK OF ALL THE CONFUSION THAT WILL BRING...OK? GET ME...VERY DISORGANIZED, CAN I SAY THAT AGAIN?
My friends at OU said that thats pretty much how OU runs soooo I guess get use to it. If you are able to ADAPT to changing situations and disorganization, you will be fine...the program has ALOT OF KINKS THAT NEED TO GET REMOVED...but all and all, if you can deal with that and really want a good solid foundation, do the program! I have talked to the sr. now at OU that were in the first round of the program last year and they sia they felt like they had an edge over the traditional OU students when they went over there their sr. year bc we get that special instruction with the teachers and have teachers that are true advocates...
--anymore questions just post...Hey, I might be your sr. buddy next year!
PS--OH yea, and we are like the red-headed step kids that nobody wants to claim! It's a joke we have going around because neither TCC nor OU claims us! hahaha...TCC nursing thinks that we think we are better than them and OU are just like "who?" lol...but we rock, our program actually has been reported this year to have the highest exam scores across the campuses!
OH YEA, and classes are at Metro and SE...so get use to moving around all week long driving back and forth (it's a pain). But know that you also have access to ALL OU facilities--so you can go to the lab there and library, etc.
**Oh and I just saw the ? about books, well...hopefully you are sitting down---the books for your jr. fall = $1000. But that's the BIGGEST chunk of the total books for the entire program...crazy huh? The spring was about uhhh 300?
Brandi, thank you *so* much, that was EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you thank you. And I knew before I applied that the books were a HEFTY sum lol.
I love that the classes are smaller, and I totally laughed at the "Red headed stepchild" comment, I had thought about that and figured as much :)
I'd love for you to be my senior buddy, hehe! I talk so much I don't know *how* anyone can not know me if they have class with me
Thankfully I'm very adept to dynamic environments, I thrive on change and try to make the most of it (if I'm not busy killing someone LOL).
So, do we have to drive to Metro AND SE during the same day...or just diff locations during the week? That's ok with me, but what is your weekly schedule like? Am i going to be in Tulsa 5 days a week? I figured I would be, I'm just looking to know when clinicals start and what the hours are, I have a 3 year old so I'll need to make arrangements if I won't be back in Bartlesville before 5:45.
Thank you again!
During my first semester I do remember having to drive to both on SOME days...before clinicals started and that was kinda a bummer but it's not that bad. Most of the time though you only go to one campus per day and then the hospital. We have quite a few students that live outside the Tulsa area (IE Glenpool, Manford, etc) and they do well getting to class/clinicals. You will be in Tulsa 5 days a week, there will be one day out of the week that is suppose to be your "off day" but trust me..it will be filled with school events (usually community clinical hours)---especially during the beginning of the semester. You go to class two days a week all day and then you have clinicals two days a week (clinicals usually don't start until about the 6th week of school)--that's when things start to get hectic. First semester they had both morning and evening clinicals available--but this semester we all had evening. Your first semester isn't bad coursework wise--you think it is while you are in it though, BUT once you hit 2nd semester (what I am currently in)---you see that first semester was a BREEZE. Your jr. year spring is known as the "weeding out" semester and I def. can see why, its considered the most challenging of the ENTIRE BSN program..so I am basically counting down these last two weeks...
Also, the books come in a "package" that comes with a CD that contains all your books so you can load them on your cpu (I live by that)--that way, I never actually open any of my books, they are all on my computer and I can highlight notes and directly make note pages with Word using it--and you can search for topics within your entire book library...its really a great investment. I know some students didn't want to buy all the books so they just went and bought them as they needed them but I wouldn't waste my time, just get the package---you can't buy that CD otherwise.
