OU Traditional BSN Fall 2016

U.S.A. Oklahoma

I haven't seen a thread for it, so I thought I'd start one...has anyone else applied for OU's Fall 2016 Traditional BSN program?! :) I applied to all 3 campuses!

Do you you know or have you talked to anybody who knows how exactly they rank? I applied to OU's ABSN in OKC for Summer 2017 and am so nervous about whether I'll get in or not. My overall GPA is okay. I screwed my GPA up my first 2 years at UT as a chem student but did really well my last 2 years, so my last 60 GPA is a 3.7. I just really want to get in

Hey hayleyreese23, I think the College heavily weighs your last 60 GPA and especially your science GPA. I think the overall GPA is not looked at so much. From what I've heard/seen, ABSN's average admitted GPAs are higher than ours (compared to the Traditional BSN program) but a 3.7 is very good!! Did you do 2 years of pre-reqs at OU? I think you'll get an even bigger advantage in admission then. Good luck!

That's good to know, thank you! Unfortunately I didn't do any of my pre-reqs at OU. I'm from Texas and went to UT, so most of my pre-reqs were all done there and that's where I got my BSN from. I'm hoping being an out of stater doesn't hurt me too much. Guess only time will tell! Do you know if a lot of people got off the waitlist and go in to your program year?

I'm from Texas too! My whole college experience has been at OU though. It won't hurt you very much, if at all. Even though it's not OU, it will look really good that your prerequisites were done at a research-level university. I've heard the admissions person stress that they prefer the prerequisites done at OU or an "equivalent research-level university". There are plenty of people in the program that did their prerequisites at OSU and got in. And yes, there is a LOT of movement on the waitlist. They admit a lot less ABSNs than BSNs, but less people apply to ABSN I think. For example there are 110ish of us in the Traditional program and I think like 40 in the ABSN program. Either way, if you end up on the waiting list, there's a good chance you'll be offered a spot. I know a good amount of people that got in off the waiting list. Though really, with your high last 60 GPA, and your (I'm assuming) good science GPA, I wouldn't be too worried!! :)

Oh good, that makes me feel much better! My science GPA isn't as good as my last 60, so that's really my only slight worry, but I feel that even if I can just get on the waitlist I'll be able to get in. I did apply for OKC though which is one of the more competitive locations from what I've heard. Is the traditional program kicking your butt or is it not as bad as you thought it would be?

OKC is more competitive compared to the Lawton campus but not as competitive as the Tulsa one! That campus is small (given that it's in an area about as big as OKC but accept not even half as many people into the traditional program) and newer so it's pretty hard to get into from what I understand.

Also, the traditional program isn't so bad! I feel like I'm constantly buried in studying/assignments but I've been doing pretty good and kept up reasonably well with everything. It's definitely way more doable than I thought.

I am considering applying for OU this next year, what would you guys say they really look at? Overall GPA? Science GPA? Both? What did you all have? Just trying to see if I even have a shot at applying :)

Hey Megan!

The biggest thing they look at is science GPA. They stressed that a lot when I was applying. I remember this handout they gave me at the Pre-Nursing Club a couple of years ago with a pyramid of what they look at in your application. Science GPA was the base, cumulative GPA was next, then # of sciences complete, then # of overall prereqs complete, and then the very top was what school you went to.

I got into the OKC campus with a 3.34 Overall and a 3.33 Science GPA, but I was an OU student who had literally every single prereq done and all sciences done except physiology when I submitted the application. It can't hurt to apply, especially because you don't have to take the TEAS or HESI (thank God)! Good luck!!

Ok that was very helpful! I currently go to OSU-OKC and will graduate this semester with an Associates in Science (Enterprise Development) so I have all the prereqs done except for the 3000-4000 level course that OU makes you take, but I plan to do that in the summer. My overall GPA is a 3.5, hopefully 3.6 after this semester. I just didn't know how well my chances would be since I am not an OU student. Do you know around how many people get in each application period?

They accept like ~110-115 people each year in the Traditional program! I think having everything done except that last class will look really good! Do you know what 3000-4000 level class you're going to take? If at OU, I recommend taking World Music if that's available :) It was super easy and fun!

I just wanted to comment because it's 2018 and I found this post and got super invested in all of you guys and the progression of your acceptance... haha. I apply to OKC in October of this year for early admission and I have no idea how it's going to go, but I hope that you guys are loving your programs! If I have the timing right most of you should actually be graduating with the BSN's, right?? That's exciting! Good luck in the real nursing world

Hello Allie! :) That is pretty cool you found our thread...yes we have all graduated now!! I take NCLEX next week and start my new job as a nurse in the OR the following week. I am super excited!!!! OU is a fantastic school, I made lifelong friends there in nursing school. The ride is crazy but worth it!! It goes by way more quickly than you would think. I feel like I was here writing about whether I was going to be accepted into nursing school not too long ago at all. I really hope you get into the OKC campus if that's your first choice!! Push through your last big science prereqs :)
