OU Nursing vs. UMich Nursing

Hi all,

I am a high school senior and a nurse-to-be looking for some advice from some Michigan nurses.

I applied to both Oakland University and the University of Michigan for nursing and I was accepted by both. At Oakland I was offered full tuition and the direct admit option, whereas at Michigan I would be paying the full hike (I wouldn't qualify for very much financial aid). I like both campuses, but I am attracted to Michigan's nursing program because of its reputation.

My question: What are the biggest differences between the two programs? Would it be worth paying tens of thousands extra to attend the University of Michigan?

Having scholarships really helps with school. I chose to attend a less-prestigious school because I was offered a full ride and not having to worry about working as much gave me time to really study and focus on school. Nursing school is a lot about what you put into it. Good luck!

It doesn't matter where you graduate from in nursing like it might in other fields. To continue on for an advanced degree you've got to have high grades regardless from where you've graduated. If you can afford the extra thousands and you want to attend the U of M for personal reasons then you should go for it, but you'll likely be earning the same as RNs from community colleges, online schools, etc. The only way I think I'd attend U of M in your situation would be if I were interested in research or having a career in academia. Otherwise, as my goal is to be a NP, my plan is for gaining a solid core education, plenty of experience, and I must consider the long haul financially.

U of M from what I hear is a great university and overall has a great reputation, but it is expensive!!! Oakland has a great reputation as well and they have offered you direct admit and full tuition coverage...TAKE IT!!! College is costly and it's not getting cheaper. Don't just look at the right now but look ahead. Can you really afford to cover the cost of tuition at U of M later down the road? I don't know your financial situation so that decison is for you to make. Good luck and I'm sure you will do great!

U of M has a great reputation but it really doesn't matter once you get your RN... and U of M's reputation is exceptional for their graduate programs; the undergrad program isn't anything special. If you weren't offered full tuition for another program, I'd say it's worth it for U of M. Finishing debt-free makes it worth it to hold off on U of M and make it a possible goal for grad school. But ultimately it's you're decision.

Really, all that matters is that you have your RN license and that you got a solid foundation wherever you went to school. And I can testify that both U of M and OU graduate great nurses. So if I was in your position, I'd go with OU and save the money for something else like grad school at U of M if you decide to go further in your education.
