OU credit question

Published

I'm new to this site and am going to be a sophomore at OU next year. I'm a transfer though, so I had a question about credits and what yall think the best thing to do would be as far as what the OU nursing school looks at. I got A&P 1 lecture and lab credit from Texas Christian (TCU), which was difficult and demanding, but I studied a lot. And then I got A&P II w/ lab from USM, which isn't very accredited (why I decided to transfer). I talked to my advisor and since the class at OU is divided into an Anatomy semester credit and then Physiology class, she told me I should get the syllabus from each college for A&P and talk to the head of the zoo department to see if I can get credit for either Anatomy or Physiology at OU. But then I started worrying that even if I got credit for 1, the OU nursing program is extremely competitive and I thought about just taking both over again (since the 2nd time around, it will obviously be easier). I don't know exactly what the nursing school in OKC looks for with the applicants as far as completing courses at OU vs other colleges, but I don't know if it would make a difference if I retook both of them or not. Anyway, if anyone has any advice, please let me know!! Thank you!

OU Nursing will not take the combined A&P classes anymore, they used to but they made it very clear in the orientation I went to they no longer do this. Just wanted to warn you.

Dont' just apply to OU, there are other really good nursing program around in the OKC and surrounding areas. Some of the schools (like OU) are so dang competitive it in your best interest to apply to as many as you can. I got accepted into UCO for the fall.

Just keep your science GPA high! I know that is what helped me get in.

Good luck. I know others here will have some good advice as well. Also check out the NCLEX pass rates (I'll bump up the link) so you can compare the schools. And don't just look at one year, kinda look at the past 5 years or so to get a good idea about how many students are actually passing the NCLEX at that school. No pass the NCLEX no working as a nurse ya know? LOL

Hey there!

I just graduated from OU College of Nursing and it is very competitive, but you can assure your acceptance in these ways:

OU is based on a point system to get in. These are the things they look for -

1. OU student (higher points are given to OU students vs. OCCC or other students)

2. Required courses taken at OU or another university (less credit is given for a harder course like anatomy that is taken at a community college)

3. science gpa

4. overall gpa

If these items are strong, then you will be ranked high and get in. I would recommend you call Margaret at the College of Nursing. She can tell you whether she would recommend you retake that class or not. Was your anatomy gross anatomy? I know they require gross anatomy.

Email me if you have any further questions! I'm happy to help.

i was told that they will accept a&p1 and a&p2 in place of taking them separately, but you must take both classes, with lab and they should both be 4 hour class. i had talked to dawn johnson at the tulsa campus about it. here is what her e-mail to me said:

as long as the coursework is through an accredited institution it should be fine. as far as a&p, as long as you complete both a&p 1 & 2, then it will transfer. what does not work is to complete a&p 1, but not 2.

so you need to check on the accreditation of the college you took the classes at, and then talk to someone at ou. i kept a copy of this e-mail filed away so i have it in case there is ever a dispute about whether they will accept it.

someone else had said one of the big criterion is being a previous ou student. wonder if it's worthwhile to take an online class through them in order to be an ou student?

Well that is weird huh? I had taken both classes seperatly but I took a friend of mine up there last week (to the OKC campus) and talked to Francene and she said it must be the separate classes.

In light of all this confusion I would definatly go up to the OKC campus and talk to someone there for confirmation.

Francene doesn't really deal with the scoring of applicants, so I would definitley talk to either Patti, Margaret (1st pick, most knowledgeable source!) or Rosalyn. Hope that helps!

I appreciate all the advice! It really helps me out! :) Thank you!

I am looking for information about the SOTC lpn program in Ardmore. Does anyone know if they accept transfers? Any info would be appreciated.
