OSU Grad Entry 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello all! I hope to start this thread as the official Q&A for the applicants of the Ohio State Graduate Entry Masters of Nursing/Nurse Practitioner Program Summer 2018 enrollment! I am in the works of applying, getting my last letter of rec together and studying for the GRE. I'm so excited!! How about you??

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, that was very helpful information! I'm applying PMHNP and not exactly sure how that compares in terms of competitiveness, but I'll definitely do some practice questions beforehand. I wasn't sure if they throw in curve balls like what's your spirit animal and why or something off-the-wall like that, haha. Sounds pretty straightforward though, so definitely feeling less nervous. Thanks again!! :)

Specializes in Emergency, Disaster Medicine, Search and Rescue.

I have no idea how competitive PMHNP was/is. Obviously, the people that apply for your class might be different than those that applied to mine. My very subjective experience is that applicants from all of the total specialties tended to have a lot of attributes: good GPA, interesting bachelor's degree or master's degree, lots of work history, something unique about their family/social history, something unique about their prior career field, lots of volunteer experience, research experience, etc...

I have 3 friends in my class who are PMHNP track (this is my experience about who they are. I'm sure they would describe themselves differently):

-One is in his 40's. He has lots of good career experience. He was a Navy Corpsman, Pharmacy Technician and then he's been in Pharmaseutical Sales for most of his career. As far as I know, his grades were ok (but not amazing). I don't know if he had any research or volunteer experience. He's got kids, but most of us do. Nothing stands out about his social/family background that makes him very unique (I would describe myself the same way).

-One is early 20's. She seems like she had amazing grades. Pre-med/Biology Student. She had good volunteer experience that applies to her field and I believe she had research experience during her bachelor's classes. She has a unique social/family background, but has almost zero work experience, and no prior career field specializations.

-I don't know a ton about the last one's history. She was a dual major Psychology and Neuroscience student. She seems super smart, and I believe she got really good grades. She seems to have a unique social/family history. I think she's right out of undergrad. I don't know anything about her work history or whether she's ever had a job.

Some people had great grades, some people had great career experiences, some had both, some had neither. EVERYONE is able to articulate why they want to be a nurse. That's the most important part of the application! I think they said that something like 60% of the application is based on your personal statement.

Best of luck! I'm sure you'll do great!
