Hello, I am a new graduate, and I just got my first job in with an orthopedic surgeon. I have so much to learn! I know the surgical side of it, but exams etc are proving to be a challenge for me (I only started 2 days ago though). Even the "language" is new to me. I am wondering if anyone can suggest resources for me? I would love to attend some hands on seminars. I see a lot for PAs, but not too much for NPs. Any suggestions would be very helpful!PS: my background is 19 years of OR as a surgical nurse (scrubbing and circulating mostly ortho cases) and critical care.
Thanks!!
I saw an ortho book a long time ago for ortho NPs so there might be some literature out there.
There is a formal Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner Certification (ONP-C). Though this board certification is not recognized by many BON's, I would imagine their recommendations for study materials to prepare for the exam would be beneficial to NP's working in the field.
Information about ONCB's ONP-C can be found here: ONP-C info
The resources are listed here, just scroll down to APN: ONCB resources
I see Duke University has an orthopedic NP track.
Yes, Duke has an orthopedic NP certification, and you can do the required classes online (about 9 credits). The clinical hours are done where you live, but the fact that you work in orthopedics might mean you could use your workplace as your clinical site.
