U.S.A. Oregon

I am new to this site, I have lived in oregon all my life and became a nurse last year. I thought it would be fun to talk to other nurses in oregon!

Well congrats! I graduated only a year ago, but it is still very fresh in my mind. I think I will remember the day I found out for the rest of my life!

I'm sure you will be able to find something, if I wanted to move, almost every larger city has 3 or 4 hospitals with sign a sign on bonus, will train, and some will even move you out there! I am not where I thought I would be. I was positive I would be on an ortho or surg unit, and wouldn't hear of anything but that. I am loving it now, and have had two jobs, niether were even close to where I thought I would be. It's like magic, you fall into where you ought to go. :)

Actually I just graduated and searching for a job. This whole job search is a pain in the behind. I really want to work in the ER or the OR, but will take any postion available. You mentioned that the farthest east you've been to is Chicago. I've never been to the west coast. I would like to go there one day.

Don't let them bother you because a nurse is a nurse anywhere.

Specializes in Med-Surg.
Now they offer a program after graduating, the apprentice program. You basiclly do some more classes "what they didn't teach in school" and then you start out slow on the floor with one or two patients. You get paid for it all, and the pay is higher than normal beginning wage. You get to work days/eve only, and usually m-f. But each week you have an assignment, and you still have to report to a mentour all the time. They say right from the beginning "Do not attempt to apply if you need ANY time off at all" so a honeymoon would have been out of the question, and possibly not able to get the day of my wedding off. You have to get a bunch of letters of reccomendation and jump through a lot of hoops. After just getting out of school, the pay and days sounded good, but it is very similar to "school continued"

Sounds like a program for new grads designed to "ease" them into working on their own.. is that correct? (Corvallis offers this as well) Do you know if they're still doing this? I've enjoyed reading your discussion :) I live in Florence, have done all my pre-reqs through Lane in Eugene, but will begin the ADN program with SOCC in September. Perhaps we'll visit your facility.. Do you receive students?

Yes, that is what it is. They still have it. We don't have many students but come visit our facility when you are in the area!

Hey Lori... I'm Manna. I'm new to this site! I was an exchange student in Oregon 2002-2003. I lived in West Linn and loved it so much! Now I'm back here in the Philippines and currently in my 2nd year of Nursing. I plan to go back and move to Oregon after I graduate Nursing. Anyways, where did you study Nursing and where do you work now? I would love to hear from you and seems like you could be a great help for me to be able to survive nursing school! =)

I am not sure when those last posts were, been a while since I have been on the net.....

I went to Southwestern Community College, and I am working in Coos Bay.

I got my notification that I passed on the internet, can't remember how the official letter was addressed.

I am now looking into doing some travel nursing (more local to this area vs. real traveling) I am going to try and find some posts related to that to get a better feel.:)

Specializes in OR.

Hello to all, I was born in Portland but when I was 2, I was moved to the Philippines to grow up. I came back to OR when I was 14 yrs old and then traveled due to the work I used to do. I have been an RN since 2002, and my favorite area is the operating room. I am planning on moving back to OR this summer and already have my OR liscence. Can anyone currently living in OR tell me what the job outlook is honestly like? Which hospitals are in need and what area would be good to try and settle in? It has been a very long time since I was last home and I know that it has probably changed a lot. Thanks again! :) :p
