When I am trying to read with a piece of candy in my mouth (like a Life-Saver,) I am able to maintain focus better. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know of any studies done on this, and if so what were the conclusions? Is it just in my head, lol?

I chew gummy bears to relieve test anxiety, I know that works. Not sure about studies on chewing and learning. I do know that pacing helps me when I study.

It is not uncommon. Occupational Therapists have been recommending teachers let kids chew gum because of it. I don't know how far they have gotten as that is such a sterotypical teacher/student tension. Or you can get silicon (or something) things for the ends of pencils that are made for chewing on. It is better than chewing the pencil :) hm, or giving your teeth a constant sugar bath for that matter.
It really does help many people learn better. It is along the same lines as doodling while you listen... you can engage more parts of your brain or at least avoid diverting energy to force yourself to not chew or wiggle or whatever.
I've seen a few studies on it over the years, I didn't save their references but if you really want to see some you could try looking at education research or OT research or homeschooling matterials.

I don't know of any specific studies showing this, but if it works for you, keep doing it!
What Saysffa says about diverting your energy really makes sense. This definitely explains why some people tap their toe/foot (or pencil!) during an exam or while really focusing.
