OR RNs with businesses

Published

Hello fellow OR RNs and future OR RNs,

I've been in OR nursing for about 2 years now and I'm realizing that I won't be able to do this forever. I thought about doing management, but I felt like management is more about who you know rather than what you know.

Found out one of my coworkers sells scrub hats as a side job instead of taking call.

Are you involved with a business or other position outside of the OR?

How old are you now? I work with with OR nurses who are 65.

I realized that I've been experiencing

I realize that I've been experiencing burnout from coworkers and surgeons who act as though they're still in elementary school. It's definitely ridiculous to see a coworker complain the the charge nurse about going home early when things in the OR aren't finished on an evening shift.

I definitely have to say that burnout hit me more emotionally than physically because I'm not as friendly towards people as I used to be when I was a student. I'm a younger nurse who was lucky to get a job before the whole job crisis/hiring freeze occurred.

I'd love to see my really old coworkers retire, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon. They're stuck in their old ways and they'll never change. I may be looking at this at the wrong angle, but I believe the culture of my current OR is to seriously pick on the newbies. It's difficult to tell someone she's wrong when she'll always believe she's correct.
