OR/DR Cases for International Students

World Registration

My university's Nursing Program (in the Philippines) states that we ONLY need 3 cases for OR - Major; DR - Newborn Cord Care; and DR - Actual.

I inquired with my instructor in charge if I (originally from California and will be returning after graduation) needed 5 cases each, as well as forms for OR- Minor, and DR- Assist. Because that is what I've been told and what I've seen on nursing blogs.

She said something along the lines of - "The Boards of Nursing abroad cannot require you to apply for their board exams with their respective (local) requirements. The Boards of Nursing will respect the protocols of the school you graduated from (which mine only requires the aforementioned) and will still allow you to take their board exams." - And then refused to give me any forms in which I could record any other cases.

Is she correct? Is it possible for me to still take the Nursing License Exam in California with just the requirements my College has demanded of me?

Or do I make it a point, that I do in fact need 5 cases in each area, to take the exams in the U.S. ?

Obviously your instructor is not aware or in denial over CA and their requirements. Each BON will require you to meet their requirements regardless on training outside the US. Suggest you talk to or email the BRN

She is incorrect. You will need to meet the requirements of the CA BON.

Your instructor is 100% wrong! Your application is now subject to the laws and regulations of any US states as set forth that holds true for any international student or nurse. What's the saying? You're in their territory now, either comply with them or don't expect to be approved.

Ask this instructor if she knows of any recent PH grads from your school that was approved by the CA BRN after the Nov. 2011 date of the stricter concurrency enforcement, this is provided these students or even the college did not "re-adjusted" the curriculum to have the appearance of being concurrent (aka fraud). When I say "recent", it must be within this past year only, not pre-2011. Ask to speak with those recent students who were given their ATT in CA, ask for their contact information or I can understand the privacy issues, so have this instructor, simply contact these students and if these students want to contact you, then, you'll know if the instructor is truthful.

Just make sure that you are completing the above at the same time as your theory class time, not weeks or months or a year or two before or after while doing the clinical part, if you even have one of them out of sequence, your transcripts will not meet the CA BRN requirements and will be denied.

I'm not sure why this instructor can't simply give the forms you wanted? However, the CHED and other agencies did reduce the 5-5-5- cases requirement to 3-3-3 to comply with the CA BRN, but as of the 2013 grads, they, too, have been denied under this "new curriculum". The problem is that the PH schools are not just impacted, but it's extremely difficult to complete the cases in a timely manner, as there's just way too many students cramming into these cases, it's not safe at all.

Here's the bottom line with regards to your instructor, if he/she doesn't want to co-operate with you, why not just ask your Dean? But you must also ask your Dean the exact same things I mentioned that was meant for the instructor.

If your instructor and or Dean still believes that the CA BRN (or any other states) MUST take the PH educational curriculum at face value and will be allowed to pass the NCLEX-RN requirements without any problem or issues.

Then print this article (by the PNAA) out and present it to them and ask them to answer: "why does the PNAA (CA and their USA general chapters) agreed with the CA BRN requirements, that has several thousand PH grads and nurses, all stranded from getting the ATT?"

If they tell you, if you're a CA resident with a SS#, you'll have no problems, tell them to say that to the other thousands of denied PH applicants, it's not only affecting the Phils, but there are many other countries in the same predicament.

I apologize for the misplacement of my thread in the topics. Thank you very much for the response C:

Thank you SO MUCH for your time and help. I can finally approach her with this evidence, she's not only been denying me, but fellow graduating SNs who have plans to go abroad. It's so relieving to have someone support my side of things.
