Opinion on Humber College RN program

HELLO!

i'm sorry if this is already a thread, i looked but couldnt really find one

I was just accepted to Humber College for bachelor of nursing degree. It is my first choice, and i am just about to accept. I wanted to get some opinions of nurses who have graduated from, or are attending humber college.

What do you think of it? Is it really difficult? Did you get the placement you wanted?

Anything that might be helpful would be GREAT

thanks a bunch everyone!

Sorry for all the questions, but do you know if i complete everything in the summer and book my paramed appointment early in september, will it all still be valid throughout the year? is there a time frame in which you have to do it?

KateWindsor, where did you get your CPR certification from? I see Humber has the course but I know you can get it done someplace else for cheaper, any suggestions? thanks so much!

i actually did it for 90 as well :( i didnt know you could do it somewhere cheaper, but oh well whats done is done

i really enjoyed the course though, it was veeeery interesting. i did it at St. Johns Ambulance in Missisauga.

and thanks Joanna, i live in peel region so i'm going to do that in the summer

i don't want to do it right away, cause i feel its a bit too early?

if i start everything in the summer when do you guys think i should make my paramed appointment?

We had to have our police checks done and submitted well before September. I don't know how Humber is. I would call them and ask now. Ryerson gave us a package, and there was a form for Police Services to complete. If you don't have one, I would first ensure that you don't need a special form from the school.

Otherwise, you could go to Peel Police and complete their form. I would definitely ask your school. When I went to Peel last year, I had already graduated, so it may have been more straightforward for me. Toronto Police requires your school or employer to fill out a package and register with them first. It's a very convoluted process.

I will have to look into CPR courses in my area and get it done asap but I'm still taking some courses (chem and bio) so I'm left with little extra time, but the CPR course is on my priority list and also getting all my shots done for paramed. ( takes soooo long)And down to the finances, June is the "payment" month, am I right? That being said, looks like the fees are due for the first two semesters?

Yes its due june 29th i believe, you can pay for each semester seperately but i think theres a charge for that, im just going to pay it at once.

CPR and first aid courses are offered regularly throughout GTA. Check Red Cross out or Heart 2 Heart, which is downtown. You can get certified usually over a weekend. It seems overwhelming, I know, but everything will work out. After year one, the process is easier, and faster. I remember feeling the same way 5 years ago. It will all be worth the headaches.

Thanks so much for the encouragement...it really helps ... what scares me the most at this point is if I will be able to survive first year of nursing school. It looks like most of the nursing students are going through major difficulties passing "those countless" exams, not to mention the clinicals and those loooooong papers....The word "paper" scares me the most. I'm more confident working with numbers rather than writing, which means I will be fine with chem and bio but perhaps will struggle writing all those papers. Currently my average is 98%, ( chem and bio), do you think I will be able to get at least a B in college? Why I'm asking you this is because I know college is a lot more different and the course levels (4U) I'm about to finish are way too easy for me right now but what should I expect in nursing school, what level of difficultie? And how many papers/week? (mind you, it takes me a good couple of hours to write an essay and hence I will have less time to study for my other courses). I know all it takes to pass is a C but will that get me a nursing degree?

We were all scared, too. That's normal. As you gain confidence, it gets easier :) I would suggest having a daytimer and organize yourself right at the beginning. Don't pull all nighters. I never did, and I was an A student. You need your rest. Organization is really the key to success. Also, I found Chemistry much harder than any of those courses in nursing school. The standards are raised each year, but if you enjoy the program, everything will come together.

I worked through school, but not a lot, so I had to organize my time. I also refused to study after 10 pm, so I knew I had to get certain things done early. Many of my friends were the same way, and we all did well. I really enjoyed school, for the most part. I hope you will too. You will learn what to read, and what is less important. As a nurse, you need to develop good prioritization skills. And the learning continues. I learn every day. For the most part, the nurses will help you, provided you are humble and show a keen interest.

As for the papers, in year one and two, we had certain hellish weeks when everything was due, but they allot plenty of time. By year four, you write 1 to 2 papers a week. And you don't have to get As either. Aim for something in the B range. I want to go to grad school, so I needed an A average. But if grad school is not something you care about, don't kill yourself. You will still get the degree and a job. Each semester, it became much easier to churn out the papers, too. I always wrote an outline first, then researched. Many people just start researching and have no idea what they want to discuss. If you have questions when you start your program, you can email me. As I mentioned, I went to Ryerson, but I do know what the program is like. I just graduated and wrote the RN exam last October.

Thanks so much again for your input and for spending the time helping a future nurse. ( Wow, that almost made me feel poud, after all being a nurse is indeed an accomplishment!!) Congrats for graduating and best of luck in your nursing career!!!!!! I will certainly e-mail you soon.:)

You're welcome :) It IS something to be proud of, and look forward to. You will get there, too.

I'm actually debating between going to Humber or Seneca to get my pre-reqs and then attend for nursing, May 30th I have my pre-admissions test at Humber and after hearing what Chloe had to say about the programs scares me! I want to make sure I pick a good school where I can enjoy the years I am there. Has anyone else heard any other similar opinions?
