Opinion: Do bad TEAS scores = Bad nursing students?

Published

Hello everyone. First of all, I am not the biggest dummy ever but I can't name any past standardized tests that I have aced. I have a 4.0 in prereqs, a 3.6 cumulative (3.8 last 60 credits) and I am extremely focused on becoming a nurse. I am currently focusing on schools/accelerated BSN programs that don't require a TEAS score. There are enough out there so this isn't the worst thing. However, there is a school right down the road from me that costs two-thirds less than others. This school requires the TEAS and IT IS WORTH 60 PERCENT YOUR ADMISSION SCORE!!! I have been looking at my guide book, taken a few excerpt quizzes and read tons of forum posts. I know that this test is going to give me plenty of trouble.

My question here is not how to study for this test. I have read all of the tips and I have nine months to study before I have to apply anywhere (most Accelerated BSN programs start in the summer). My actual question is:

Do you agree with the idea that a good TEAS score represents the ability to earn a BSN? Did you score poorly on the TEAS and earn your BSN? Did you get a great score but disagree with the idea that the TEAS is a solid indicator of success? Do you agree that the TEAS means everything? I would love to read lots of replies from lots of different people! Thank you!

I dont agree. I took the TEAS V, I have a GPA of 3.96. I graduated with a Chemistry degree, Summa Cum Laude. I found out the gist of it all after getting a score of 68%. The People who spend the big money on the study guides and materials have an advantage. They have the actual questions that will be on the test!!! I did not pay the money for the bundle. All I see is the people post (cautiously, stating publically, I scored 87% and I was dissappointed....), it is BS. They bought the packet studied the same questions and felt confident knowing they knew the format and type of questions on the exam, yet, made a measly 87%. I bought the Pretests A and B and scored 89% on the First and 93.3% on the second with my 4-year degree. I felt cheated. I can run circles mathematically and in pharmacology, plus I scored 100% on the Grammar and 85 on Reading. The TEAS V can not be a measurement of success or intelligence if you can BUY the Bundle and Memorize!!!! I pray to God the Nursing Pre-licensure Program may take my Merit and tenure into consideration of the TEAS. The would not accept my high GRE scores , they wanted the TEAS--go figure that one!

This is inaccurate. I bought the study package. It contains study material that teaches you what you need to know to successfully do well on the TEAS. It also provides example questions to familiarize you with the format and content, but NONE of the questions provided in the study guide were on the actual TEAS test. NONE. The written questions in the TEAS booklet were similar to the questions on the online practice tests that you took. But, as with the online practice tests, they aren't the actual questions. It's honestly silly to think that they are. However, those who purchase the study package are better prepared because the book literally re-teaches you all the stuff you have forgotten from high school and it only teaches you what you need to know, so you don't waste time studying info that isn't relevant to the test.

That's like saying that NCLEX study guides give you the NCLEX questions. The idea is laughable.

I've very mixed feelings about the TEAS V. I do not believe it is an indicator of success. I would rather see schools go by the following:

  1. Strong emphasis on small set of core prerequisites (i.e. AP 1, AP 2, Microbiology)
  2. A minimum GPA whereby in the score sciences, A's or B's were achieved
  3. The ability to do basic math for dosage calculations
  4. Along with other standards that don't include the TEAS V; or if they did use the TEAS V, then at least have it only worth 1/4th to 1/5th of the requirement to get into RN school.

Well, you may be right since I never bought the bundle, but I was upset when I saw the same questions that were on my exact test here:1. Giraffes have long necks that allow them to reach more food.

It was too weird. I scored a 93% on TEST A. I should have bought the bundle to get used to the format. Also, I tested at a psi proctor center in a very bad neighborhood. I appreciate your comment because I felt a bit cheated if they were questions right from the test floating around.

I truly felt that there was a study guide out there since those questions on coursehero were to uncanny--word for word.
