Operating Room Scrubs Sizes

Published

I was just wondering what the deal was with hospital-issued scrubs. I am a tall, larger sized girl and was hoping to avoid any embarrassment regarding having to wear high-water pants or a top that doesn't fit. What is the size situation on the scrubs? Are they made for tall people? What sizes do they come in? Does your hospital use a vending machine type thing?

Our scrubs are on racks outside the locker rooms. They come in standard unisex sizes. I'm tall and have to wear the waist rolled and at my hips so they'll be long enough for me. They look like clown pants on most of the girls but nobody cares what your pants look like in the OR. Most days I bring my own tall pants sice I'm most comfy in those. We can bring in freshly laundered scrubs to chage in to at our OR.

Our scrubs are on shelves in the locker room. Sizes vary, even though they're all from the same company. Some days I can get a pair of pants that are absolutely huge on me and I'm tripping over them, other days the exact same size is so tight I may split the seams. Little trick I've learned after having to go locker room to locker room looking for my size- I keep at least one if not two extra sets in my locker. Can't depend on laundry to get scrubs to the unit on certain days.

Our hospital uses the dispenser- we each get two credits for two sets of scrubs. XS is kept in a separate shelf for the petite staff, S thru 2XL is in the machine. We have the same problems with size range- some days you get new, HUGE scrubs and some days they're old and insanely tight. I keep a couple extra sets in my locker- it's easy to trick the machine and return any old thing from the hamper in the locker room get a credit if I need one. I'm tall/large too, and some days the pants are terribly short, but it's true nobody will tease you about ill-fitting scrubs because we all deal with it.

Im going to be doing my OR rotation this semester and I am terrified the OR scrubs will not fit, is 2xL the largest they normally get? I'm a big girl and worried if I can't fit the scrubs I wont be able to do the rotation! Not sure if that is a deal breaker for the program or not. Any reply would be nice, TY

While there is a lot of variability with the sizes, the scrubs in my hospital tend to run big. Another RN and I can comfortably into each leg of the 2XL and walk around the department.

my OR stocks XS to 4X. unfortunately, i would fit best in a small top/med pant, but they only package same sizes together. And they usually are out of med, so I wind up in larges. another place i worked in had open shelves of scrubs so you could mix/match sizes. its a never ending battle!! but i would not want to have to bring my scrubs home to be washed either, that's just gross, so I deal with it...
