Could you use pop-off sutures for a hernia repair? Just curious.

All that a pop off means is that the needle is designed to release from the suture very easily. It's a surgeon preference- those pop offs come in a variety of different types of sutures. There is no difference in the actual suture when comparing "pop-offs" (aka Controlled release) versus the standard needle... the difference, as Rose Queen posted is how the suture is attached or swaged in the needle. You'll find pop-off are used where they want to make lots of ties, like in securing a mesh to the abdominal wall for hernias... but ultimately, it's a surgeon's preference.
