O.R. job shadow

Specialties Operating Room

Published

Hi there,

I am more than certain that I want to go thru schooling and do my LPN. Once I go thru the 16 months/2 yrs of schooling take the long distance O.R. course.

No here is my issue. I have "been" in the O.R. on multiple occasions (as a patient mind you) but wanted to know how I could attempt to arrange a job shadow in an OR when you don't actually yet know of any nurses?

I am located in Calgary, AB. I've been so blessed so far with this wonderful site. Some truely great people come on here and provide information. I would really appreciate some ideas as to how I can go about this.

Thanks again

Contact Human Resources at the hospital that you would like to shadow at and explain what you're wanting to do and why, and what you would need to do next to arrange this.

Also, they will probably ask that you sign a confidentiality agreement, but that's standard.

Will do that first thing in the morning then, Thank you Marie!!

No problem :)

As part of our med/surg rotation in clinicals we got to shadow a patient from pre-op, actual surgery, post-op.

I don't know about a job shadow for any period of time because here in Alberta ORTech is a specialty tag and you will not be allowed to go on an OR placement while a student PN. The best thing you could do is ask your nurse placement co-ordinator if they know any ORTechs who would be willing to talk to you.

One of the speakers at this year's PN convention is an ORTech from the military who will be discussing his job.

The CLPNA is the best place to start. You may also need to work a certain number of hours before being eligible for the course.

The thing is I am not yet a nursing student yet alone even sent my application for the fall (but sending my application tomorrow). Does that change things?

CLPNA is our regulating body and loves to hear from students and prosepective students. They have a toll free number and they are really good about answering e-mails.

Change things for shadowing?

Sorry I must have not understood what Fiona posted. From the looks of it I won't be able to do a shadow but might be able to talk to an ORTech? I hadnt thought of calling CLPNA but will do that as well.

I don't see why you couldn't shadow, though, unless there is some sort of rule against it. We have high school students that shadow where i work, they just have to follow the rules and sign that confidentiality form.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I just sent an email to CLPNA and asked for some guidance as well. I will call one of the hospitals tomorrow morning here in Calgary and see what amount of help I can get that way.

Thanks again!
