Online RN to BSN with an encumbered license

Greetings fellow nurses,

I am currently finishing my 1st year of a 4 year Reinstatement Consent Order (RCO) with the Connecticut Department of Public Health. I have an amazing job as a staff nurse at a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility and currently hold an associates degree. I am looking to continue my education by enrolling in an online RN to BSN program but seem to have hit a brick wall, as each and every program I have researched throughout the country has “current unencumbered/unrestricted RN license” as an admissions requirement due to clinical course placement. I was wondering if there was anyone else out there who has dealt with this issue or has any useful information. I have an incredibly supportive Director of Nursing, Medical Director and CEO who are fully aware of all the details of my RCO and have offered to help in any way that they can. I’m wondering if there are any online RN to BSN programs in existence that do not have a clinical component/requirement, as it appears that my Consent Order precludes any program that has one from accepting me. I realize ultimately I may have to accept the possibility of successfully completing my 4 years of monitoring before continuing my education. However I will research every possibility and contact every possible program director before doing so. I never thought I’d have the wonderful job that I have today much less get my license back, so I know where there’s a will there’s a way.

Thank you so much for your help. I have today off work and am going to use the info you gave me to see what I come up with. Also thank you for giving me some hope, I have been pretty down about this for a while now. I will be sure to let you know how it goes.

I found an online BSN program here in CT and graduated in May 2021.  They suspended the program due to low enrollment.

Hello. I know this post is somewhat outdated. Just curious if anyone has had any luck finding programs that will accept you for RN-BSN while In the alternative to discipline programs. TIA!

Hello! I know this post is somewhat old but wanted to share with you guys I was able to find 2 schools for RN-BSN that will accept nurses in monitoring as long as your license is active. Chamberlain University was one of them. They are a lot more expensive than what I was hoping for. About 19k for their program. Ohio University was the other and the tuition is very affordable. I think around 7-8k for the whole program. I had a great experience talking with Ohio University so I decided to go with them. They are fully accredited and have excellent numbers for retention and graduation rates. Another possibility is University of Cincinnati. They are affordable also. She couldn't give me a definite answer but stated as long as my license is active they consider it case by case. I didn't check back in to UC very much since I decided to go with Ohio University. The only think to note is that Ohio University only accepts students from certain states. I will attaché a picture of the states you have to live in. I hope this helps someone as I have spent the last few weeks making myself sick with stress trying to find a place to go after Western Governors turned me down along with several other universities.

I too am searching for an RN-BSN online program.  My license is Active but "on probation".  Has anyone found current programs that will accept us?  I've contacted Ohio University and Chamberlain and they now say no, along with many others.  So depressing.
