Have you checked into taking the Dantes Exam -Principles of Public Speaking. It is a written test with in impromptu persausive speech. It seemed quite easy when I took it in December I am waiting for my results. The other option with www.byu.edu. I don't think there is a auidence requirement. I might be wrong. It might be worth checking into. Hope this helps
How does the Dantes exam work? was there a study guide?
I read some stuff from the Dantes website.....I actually know nothing about CLEPPing........so you can take exams that will give you credit for passing a whole course?
What if its something you need a letter grade in, like for nursing programs that go by GPA?
Do they give you a letter grade for the course the same as the grade you get on the test????
If you take Dantes/clep exams and pass you automatically get credits. My understanding that some colleges give grades based on your score, but I think for the most part it is a pass and receiving credits. There are not any nursing courses, just gen eds. These exams are less than 100 dollars. I bought a public speaking text book to study. I'll let you know how it turns out.

NHRNmomof3-Did you get your reulsts back yet? I am planning to take the Dantes exam for public speaking. I am not overly concerned about the written portion, just the impromptu speach portion, the ten minutes you get to prepare is not a lot of time......and 3 minutes is a long time if you dont' have much to say about a topic.
Did they give you a choice of topics or just assign one to you? and did you find it hard to reach your 3 minute mark?

Jasmine,
I am taking an online public speaking at my local community college and we have to do three speeches with 7 audience members over the age of 16. Most everyone in the class reported the same problem of not having an audience of their own, so we broke up into groups and met at the campus and filmed and watched each other, even if only a handful of people are interested, if each one brings one person then you would have enough people. It only took us an hour to film 5 people's speeches the other night. One more to go and I am finished.
I did get my results back. It takes abou 6 weeks. I did pass both. Try a sample topic and prepare for 10 minutes and then do the speech timed. I think you might be surprised at how well you can do. It was also helpful fo rme to record it and listen to it afterwards. Even though I hated the sound of my own voice. You get what ever topic they give you. You do get scrap paper to write notes. Make sure to practice a persausive impromptu speech a few times to give yourself some added confidence. Best Luck.
You said you passed both....what other test did you take? I am also wanting to take the Technical writing w/essay. Congratulations!
I did not take the technical writing exam. I was talking about the 2 parts, written and oral part of the PUblic Speaking exam. I also did the Dantes Life Span Development class, but that is for Dantes. I did the the CLEP psychology (11 years ago), Dev Psych (10 yearss ago), American LIt (this summer), Computer science (year ago). I also did the Chem (Don't recommend it) I failed really bad and passes all others with flying colors. Good Luck.
I purchased a study guide for the Principles of public speaking and I am really having my doubts about this. I don't have a problem speaking in front of people......especially if I have had time to prepare my materials. But....I just don't think I can pull off a speach on a topic that I may not know anything about. If I could choose my topic I might have a chance but being given one at random?
Has anyone else taken this that can give me some words of wisdom? How do you prepare for and have enough material to speak on a subject if you know nothing about it? I feel like I a good writer and can be a good speaker but not quick with words. When I write, I can stop, erase, think some more and start again.....with a speech you don't have that luxury and I don't want to get up there and look like a rambling idiot:uhoh21:
First take a deep breath and relax. The topic is fairly generaly and is one in which almost any one could speak. Choose a side . Your are given 10 minutes prepare. I was nervous as well, but felt I had the time to prepare. I wrote out my speech in about 8-9 minutes, made quick fixes and went with it. This enabled me to read it without stubbling over the words. Best of Luck.
