Online Post-Masters PMHNP programs

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Updated:   Published

OK so I have my MSN in Nursing Education from . I have been a psych nurse for 9 years & have my psych Cert as well as CARN cert. I am ready to take the next & earn my PMHNP but am experiencing difficulty finding an online school that offers PMHNP post-masters certificates & does not require you to already be a NP or take GMAT/GRE. Any insight will be helpful. TIA

University of Cincinnati!

Hi fellow Alumni of WGU. I received my postmaster's PMHNP from University of Cincinnati and I wasn't a NP.

Hey there - I transferred form a MSN-DNP at MSU to the FNP and then PMHNP-PMC program at UC. How did you like it? I’ve been having the worst time with preceptors and contracts which explains some of my transferring, and deferred while pregnant the last year or so but plan to go back to finish the final 9 classes (including clinical) end of 2020.

I’m curious how you found the program worked for you. The UC FNP courses were basically instructors reading slides and I wanted to tear my hair out. My first 2 semesters I got straight As with moderate effort which was crazy frustrating since it was far more work than I had put into my previous grad degree, but I’m hopeful the psych route (which is much needed in my rural area) will be more engaging and dynamic.

Thoughts on instructors? Class layout? Communication among faculty and staff? Finding clinical placement? Did you pass Boards first try? Thanks so much!

I'm so sorry I'm just now seeing your reply. I had no problem with the psych NP route. People have different styles of teaching, but made it through and learned quite a bit. I think the clinical is the best way to apply and gain knowledge. Speaking of clinical, it is horrendous trying to find a preceptor. They give you a list of NPs or places that have previously precepted their students if you reach out to the clinical coordinator to assist in your search. My advice is to find as many (at least 3) preceptors to ensure you have someone for your clinical. Yes, I took my board exam and past on the first try passed on the first try. I used lantern review, Barkley & Fitzgerald audio cds, as well as ANA questions.
