Online nursing???

Try excelsior

Someone please help! I'm going crazy trying to find an online program. I'm ready to start school, but I can't attend full time as I have 3 kids still at home. The only program I have found is Deaconess, but it is way too expensive, and I can't spend 4 days a semester in St. Louis. I already have a Bachelor's in Nutrition, but my GPA is not great. Any information will be helpful!

I also have small children and cannot go to schol full time. There is a hospital in my area that offers a path to RN that is 3 yrs instead of 2. I will be going Tuesday and Thursday nights and every other weekend. Maybe there is a similar program in your area.

I think Deaconess and Excelsior are the only two where you can obtain an RN online (the classes, not clinical). Most others are for RN's wanting to obtain their BSN. I think either way, online learning will be more expensive, because you are paying a lot for the convenience.

A lot of community colleges have part-time programs, since a lot of nursing students are working, parents or both. I go to a private college, but even they have accomodations for busy parents. They have options of weekend clinicals, evening clinicals, etc. I hope you can find something.

Their is another program in Minnesota that I am awaiting information on.

It still requires a time commitment at the school, a bit more than Deaconnes.

Since you cannot leave you children, Your best bet would be a part-time, weekend or evening program in your area. Good luck.

That is a problem, both with some state boards and some employers. You'll never be able to practice in California, for example, if you graduate from Excelsior ... (although Excelsior grads like to point out that the program isn't actually "online" but that's how people perceive it).

What's interesting is that even some Excelsior grads now recommend attending a conventional program, which is discussed on this thread:

How old are your kids? I know how you feel, and unfortunately I can't offer any advice. I have been itching to start my ADN for awhile, I have one in school, and one still at home. Sometimes all we can do is wait, take prereqs in the meanwhile. I would do the 14 month 2nd bach. degree pgm around here IF I didn't have kids, but I do and honestly nursing school isn't going anywhere. I have seen several hospitals that offer scholarships, however the biggest hurddle for me isn't the tuition (the ADN pgm I want is really cheap)its childcare, and that they don't offer assitance for, at least not near me. Look into night and weekend options, but it depends on your area. Near me there are 2 BSN and 3 ADN pgms, but NOTHING at night. It stinks!!!

My kids are 22 months, almost 4 and almost 5. My first one wills start kindergarten in 2006. Hopefully the first 2 will start in 2006. They are only 11 months apart and my son has to wait a year, but my daughter doesn't. I agree with you on the childcare issue. I can't afford to put 3 in childcare and there really is no assistance for that. There are 3 adn programs within 2 hours of me, then there is UT and Mary Hardin Baylor. They are all day programs. No part time either. I thought about doing an LVN program and then bridging later, but why spend one year in school just to have to go back because you can't really find a job. They don't hire LVN's in women's services (L&D, postpartum etc.) I will just have to be patient. I just don't want to be 40 and still in school! Thanks for all the great info!

There is an online program open only to residents of Texas thought TAMU and Del MAr college.

It is fully accredited and the clinicals are set up through the schoool at local areas with local DON's.

The folks I know in Dallas who are in the program say it is hard, but they think it is the best thing sice Noah built the Ark!. A former DON I worked with recommends it to her OR personnel who want to be nurses but can't quit full-time work or for whatever reason the traditional program won't work.
