I've signed up for 2 classes for the fall semester, both being online: US history and Art appreciation. I've never taken online classes before and was wondering what your thoughts were of this? I know people take classes online all the time but just wanted others opinions.

Hello. I took several online classes and I really enjoyed them. You definetly have to to be a self starter, and be able to get things done without constant reminder. I enjoyed it because I have kids and I had a full time job, so I could do my school work at night when everyone else was asleep. I know that they are not for everyone, so good luck!!

I love online classes. I just finished my homework and lecture for a online math class a few mins ago. It's nice to be able to do your classwork whenever it is convenient for you. You can sometimes work ahead and finish the class early.

I agree with the other posts. Online classes are great. I took History 121 online and it was much easier than when i took History 111 in class. It's an automatic A if you put in the work. You get to use your book with test. They say that the alloted time you get disables you from being able to use your book, but it's not true. My instructors told me that using the book was allowed if you can finish tests in time. I made an A in every online course I ever took and there were plenty. So take the online course, you do work when it's convenient for you. Trust me....I looked for online classes first and then I applied to other courses.

Online classes are my favorite. One semester I took 4 at once, with one class on campus. I love being able to do the work whenever I want to, wearing whatever I want to, without having to drive to campus. I'd do all my classes that way if it were possible!

I've taken many classes on line - Algebra, Statistics, Chemistry of Life, Sociology.... This month I start A & P II online. I like not having to drive to the college at a scheduled time. I can read the book and do the assignments whenever it fits into my schedule. I also like that you don't have to sit in a classroom with a bunch of students who may ask the same questions over and over, when it's a concept that I may not have to dwell on. I agree that you have to be self motivated. Without that drive to push yourself you will fall behind and never get caught up.

I also like them but would caution against taking a class online you know is going to be challenging for you. The fluffy gen-ed classes were a breeze.

I've taught online ... and here is a piece of advice:
Don't fall behind early in the semester, particularly if there are require group activities required. If you fall behind on those types of activities, it can be hard to catch up as the group goes ahead without you. You can then find yourself having to implement group project plans that you did not participate in formulating and which do not suit you. Also, the more active group members may take all the "plumb" assigned tasks for themselves and you are stuck with what is left over that nobody else wanted. etc.
Finally, if you fall behind and/or need some help later in the semester, the group will be much more supportive and willing to hellp someone who has been an active group participant along rather than one who was "absent" most of the semester and then shows up only when they need help.
I find the people who do well in online courses are ready to go at the beginning, get involved and active right away, and don't delay in "figuring out how the course works."
It's an automatic A if you put in the work. You get to use your book with test. They say that the alloted time you get disables you from being able to use your book, but it's not true. My instructors told me that using the book was allowed if you can finish tests in time.
This, of course, varies. I was able to use my book on the "fluff" gen ed classes, but not on any core classes, such as Pathophysiology and Nutrition. We had to use the testing center at the college for those. I also do not think these are "easy A's". They take work and commitment and I think you will be doing yourself a disservice if you get into the mind frame that they do not take work and time. You also need to stay on task...
Again, good luck!
That's why I said if you put in the work.....poster is taking history and art.....? General classes....
