Online applications: Should I go in personally to HR?

Published

I'm a chaplain intern for almost a year at a local hospital and the whole staff knows me well. I'm now applying for nursing team positions and the charge nurse I work with told me about a spot she has, but HR told me I had to submit application online which I did, with all of the internal recommendations I had which I attached to the application. HR kind of barked at me, "you have to apply online!". Should I go in now after the online submission and say to HR - oh hi I just wanted to say hello, or will it bother them? I just don't want my application to get overlooked among the thousands they must get!!!

Well good luck getting HR to pick up the phone. There's usually an automated message telling you your application is being reviewed/has been reviewed, and if you are considered, you will be notified. They get hundreds of calls for that exact same request. Your best bet is to reach out to your charge nurse friend who can assist with the internal workings.

Visiting the HR department in-person has worked out for a handful of people and failed miserably for many others. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Generally, HR staff does not like to be bothered unless they initiate the encounter.
