Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out if one year of experience in an canadian outpost with no doctor is enough to start being an agency nurse? I think it is but some of my nurse family members do not. I don't get it, if I can practice without a doc for a year, I should be able to jump into a small ER with a Doc 10 minutes away no problem, even without a long orientation.

Any thoughts on this?

If you have at least 12months and ACLS/PALS, you should be plenty marketable.

I think you could do it. I work in a small rural hospital, where I started as a new grad. Unless you've worked rural, many people don't understand the amount of autonomy, and critical thinking that's involved. At least there is support available on a busier unit.

New.Rn,

I'm guessing you work as a community health nurse under the expanded scope of practice in the Northwest Territories or Nunavut? Most nurses here will have no idea (and be blown away) by the autonomy and extra responsibility involved.
