"Just" an LPN
I'm "just" an RN. And I've learned loads from LPN's over my career. Health care wouldn't work with out LPN's!

One year outpost experience enough to do agency nursing?
Hi All, I'm trying to figure out if one year of experience in an canadian outpost with no doctor is enough to start being an agency nurse? I think it is but some of my nurse family members do not. I don't get it, if I can practice without a doc for a year, I should be able to jump into a small ER with a Doc 10 minutes away no problem, even without a long orientation. Any thoughts on this?

How to stay calm during traumas?
Hi All, I agree that coming up here is hard... However, there is no one else to come up. The only people that will come up are new grads that NEED experience. And with the job market being so poor... it makes sense to come up. I came up because I wanted to learn about northern culture, gain some skills and make some money. Almost everyone here is within there first 1-2 years of nursing. Experienced nurses don't want to come... I really wish they did. I do really love it here. I love suturing, figuring out diagnosis and everything else :) It's just trauma that is difficult. I'm pretty good at it. It's just ruff sometimes... I'm looking for tips to help me learn and be better :) -New RN

Nursing in northern communities
Hi, I'm in Northern Ontario with Weeneebayko Area Health Authority . Little to no orientation here, you'll be given 2 weeks of quick shadowing then your on your own. But we are sort staffed (as always) and it's a good job after the first couple months of hell. If you've got any questions PM me :) -New.RN

How to stay calm during traumas?
Hi, I'm a new grad and I really like my job in my northern nursing hospital job. I love the challenge, I love being able to prescribe meds, diagnose and caring for patients in a completely different, more complete and complex way than "down south". However... Traumas with no doc are super scary. I'm never sure what meds I can give without telephone orders, or what really to do other than get a line, try and stabilize my ABCs then call the doc to figure out what to do next. Clearing C-spines is something I just kinda avoid if at all possible. I'm getting better at staying calm( I never freak out, but I get nervous and rushed...). It's getting better with practice. But it's really hard. Does anyone else have a similar experience? What are your tricks for staying calm? Thank you! -New RN PS:There are basically no training or resources here. And the last time the policy and procedure where updated was before I was born.

Anyone ever feel lonely? (a little depressing)
I have a very out of the box suggestion. Try ballroom dancing! I could have written your post a few years ago before I started, but now I'm different! Dancing is something that is fun and everyone looks silly doing it when they start! Try swing dancing! You actually have moves that are designed just to make others laugh. Also, people who dance for fun, love it and other dancers! it's something you can always do with other people. Those other people eventually become your friends Also, you usually don't need a partner to start! Try it!

How about telehealth or research positions? I don't know what your finances are like, but you could try and get your masters and do your own research?

June 2010 CRNE Results
I called the CNO this morning. I can't work until I get them so I'm really anxious! They told me that the CNO released the first results on July 19th. That means that we should all have them by the 1st of August, given the 8 to 10 business days of shipping. She also said that they would accept late applications to write the exam again. No guarantee though! ! One of the things I found odd was this: I asked the person I was talking to for her full name or another way to identify her, she said no. I was just trying to make sure that if I needed to verify that I had indeed called and spoken to her, I could. She just got kind of rude and said that she would not give me any identifying information. How can people be accountable if I can't even know who they are? Is this normal?

Nurse to Midwife in Canada
Hi There, I'm really interested in midwifery. Has anyone made the translation between nursing to midwifery in Canada? Where can you get educated in less than 4 years? Ryerson has a 2 year program for health professional but it requires L&D experience. I'm also looking to the states because there I could get my masters of nursing in Midwifery. However, I'd then has to do the midwifery Bridging program. I'm confused about where to go. Also, I'd love to do a program internationally, but I'm not sure which programs are acceptable! Any illuminations would be greatly appreciate!
