Well I got bad news two days in a row! One rejection letter yesterday from Sutter Extended Campus and two others today. That truly stinks! This is my second time applying for ARC and SCC programs in Sacramento, CA but when you have 631 qualified applicants and your selection is based on lottery, there is not much hope. So I am still waiting on Yuba College which is a waitlisted program. Once again I wait. Thank goodness I have a good job that I love. So now I am going to wait until the next application period (Sept) and take my prereq's for the entry level master's program at Sac State (I already have a BS in Health Science). Sigh. I need some good news!
Argh... the joys of nursing app. It kills me, too, that they won't let you go back and get at least your transcripts back as that is rather costly. With the availability of online classes now as well as many 2nd degree students, there are many of us that had to get transcripts from 6 or more colleges. Supposedly (at least at Sierra) they don't even open your packet if your number doesnt' come up so why not let you get at least get your materials back.
I never know what to believe but it seems like the counselors either don't know what the real process is or at least are confused. I had two different counselors at Sierra tell me I would have no problem getting into the nursing program with my grades and yet the official policy is that it's lottery so grades really don't matter (as long as they are above the cut-off). I'd like to believe the counselors but I'm afraid that's wishful thinking.
The more I read about multiple applications from qualified students, the more I think I should start seriously considering CSUS.
Also, thanks for the link to Sutter's program. I think I'm going to call them on Monday as I can't tell if they actually rank based on GPA or if it's just a requirement that you have greater than a 3.0 but doesn't matter what it is as long as it's higher than that.
Thank goodness I have a relaxed attitude about things because applying to nursing school in the Sacramento area can be a stressful and discouraging experience. My hubby and I were going to wait to have our second child until after I finish nursing school but I'm not going to wait anymore because, seriously, who knows when I'll get in. I don't want to have a big age gap between my kids (daughter is 19 months old). Life does go on and I refuse to let these schools dictate when I can experience the important things in life like expanding my family. Good luck to all applying and congrats to all who got in!
We have a 5 year old daughter and are waiting until I finish school to have another baby. I've been ready since she was about a year and a half, but financially it's better for us to wait. In my family we have babies all at once and get it done. My mom and her next sister are 11 months apart. My sister and I are 21 months apart. I'm starting to think it will be likely that Samantha will be an only child. It devastates me, but I've waited so long to get into school and she's getting so big... I don't want a huge age difference, either, so as much as I long for another baby or two, she may be it.
I thought about applying to Sac State's nursing program as well, but I haven't taken Organic Chemistry or Statistics. I think there's another class between general chem and O Chem... If I didn't get in for Fall, I was planning on working my way toward Sac State. We live maybe 20 blocks away from there, so it's the closest school anyway!
I think the community college applications would be more fair if they required an entrance essay describing why the applicant believes they would make a good nurse. I've never worked or volunteered in a hospital, but I had leukemia when I was 13 and my mom was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease 3 and a half years ago and I can tube feed her, suction her chest and mouth and change the canula on her trach. I do daycare at home and one of the daycare babies has PUV and only 25% kidney function....
They should do something to make the process more fair. It's infuriating to know this is what you want to do and put your life on hold for who knows how long while you wait to get in.
I agree, an essay would at least broaden the perspective they are getting on the applicants. The whole process needs revamping.
I always thought nursing was interesting but I really became involved in the field of medicine after my DD was diagnosed with multiple, life-threatening food allergies. Our allergist would send the all the medical journal articles and I found I just wanted to know more and more, and I loved learning about the body.
BTW, my kids are 4 years apart and I love that age difference so don't give up hope - the best age difference is what works best with your family situation.
I've been accepted to Sutter's Program for the fall. That was just wrong of ARC to send you a bright DENIED letter! I've been tutoring as a Beacon for my two semester wait to get in. I think I only got into sutter because I have a 4.0, I was not able to take the TEAS for Sac State to apply in time, everything else is done (Stat, O-Chem, general ed brouhaha).
I've noticed a disturbing trend in the last two semesters, many people getting their apps back saying -you are not qualified - due to the app not being complete. I've talked to too many people for this to be random. Usually it is something benign - like reading assessment scores not included - even though the counselor checked it off!
Word to the wise, check everything, do not trust the counselors work. I had a friend who was set to apply to dental hygiene, last spring when she was finishing her pre req's she went to the counseling office and asked if anything had changed or she needed anything else, as she would have two dead semesters (they only apply once a year). Counseling said "you are all good". She took a history and a Spanish class and ducked around and then found out she was just shy of the GPA for Science, 2 c's in Chem, 2 B's in Bio and one A in 431. See they count chems in dental, the counselor didn't know this. So her choice was wait another year (after retaking the class, which she had to go to ARC to do, SCC said not enough time had elapsed) or apply to Western's program, and take the debt.
From way back I knew a couple of people who got accepted to and finished good nursing programs only to go down routes that, to me, seemed a waste of a nursing degree. Every time someone takes up a space in nursing school and then does not use their training, even if only for long enough to find out that they were not cut out for nursing, there is probably one qualified, conscientious person who gives up. There are many threads on this board describing poor students who display don't care attitudes that fall into the same category: taking up a space that could better be filled by someone who really wants to be a nurse. Too bad more of these bad apples can't be weeded out in favor of serious students. Just my soapbox rant for today. Hope that the other posters on this thread eventually get into a program.

Just left a message, for her. Hopefully she calls me back, thanks. Also going to send of an email. Congrats by the way on getting in.
