Older Woman Plans on Being a New RN

Published

My husband and I plan on moving to Central Florida in approximately 2 years (we already have the building lot). I'm planning on making my dream happen and go for my ADN.

Question: I know no one has a crystal ball, but does it make any sense for a "mature woman" (I'm talking late 50's) to embark on a second career as an RN? Are there hiring possibilities for a newly-hatched RN who remembers growing up in the 1950's and 1960's (when mini-skirts and the Beatles were considered radical) ? I'm not looking for huge bucks and am not looking to be in charge of a hospital or anything.

I figure since I've spent most of my working career slaving for lawyers, anything's possible :chuckle

Oh, and we'll be living in Lake County, Florida about 45 minutes from Orlando.

Thanks in advance :yeah:

Nice to meet you! Good luck in all you do!

Go for it!

I'll be graduating from my LPN next June (I'm 46) and won't stop! Have big plans for myself!

And... I'm proud to say that I hold the only 4.0 GPA in my cohort! Of course I have to study way more than my youngers (heheheh... less neurons alive), but at the same time I have my life under control (no need for parties, no need for dates, a stable relationship, and maturity...hehehe), what gives me more time to study.

Go for it, darling!! :coollook:

Wow, Thanks to all of your comments. I have been feeling like, am I to old to be a Nurse. All of these replys will sure help me study even more for my A&P finals this week. I will be 49 this June. I will be 51 when I graduate.

I have known since I was 5 that I wanted to be a Nurse, I remember that I always love the smell of a Hospital and the scent of band-aids and rubbing alcohol, strange huh? But life happens and I had to waitress to feed my children and then became a restaurant manager but the call of Nursing came to call again. God bless you all and thanks for giving be the torch to continue.

:nurse::bowingpur Oh and by the way I live in Maine. I also have a fantasy about moving to Florida. Can anyone tell me the best place to live down there? My daughter is moving to Dania, Hollywood area next winter. Thanks for any advice.

This is what my mom told me when I told her I was going to start nursing school, Cathleen:

"You are 44 yo now.

If you go to school, you will be 46 in 2008.

If you DO NOT go to school, you will be 46 in 2008.

So.... pick one!!" :specs:
