Hi all!!Well let me introduce myself and give the short version of my so called life

Ok..well...back in 1986 when i graduated high school(yes Im in my 40's)I sorta played around.Went BACK to college to take nursing that would eventually lead me to medical school.I was early 20's.Through a series of bad luck and being talked OUT of my dreams(was too old to get into medschool and I was at a community college) I dropped out.Fast forward to now.No more school and a series of HORRIBLE jobs.Im tired of it.I need a career. My thoughts are this...I need a JOB NOW...so I was going to take a pharmacy tech course and with that done...that be my job and help pay for nursing school

Am i stupid or old or crazy?LOL//the pharmacy tech is a stop gap toget me going and have an OK paycheck.Im earning minimum wage now and I have to work two jobs to keep up

Im in NC but may move to WV.please help out an old girl...lol

and hello everyone...Im so excited and happy to be here

Your never to old to learn....my mom is in her 40's and i'm trying to encourage her to go back to school as well. Just think even if your in your 40's and take a year or two out of your life to get go to school you still have 20 sum odd years to work in that feild before you would even hit retirement age...20 years is a long time to work in a job, scpecially if you like it. Be encouraged gt you education....if no one else believes in you i know that you can do it. :)

awww...thanks.I just hope it doesnt kill me,,lol.I wish i had done it sooner...but alas here i am

I second Mesha.

You might consider Nurse Assistant rather than pharmacy tech, though. They are more in line with what you will be doing as a nurse.

:-) Just remember sometimes you have to encourage your self to make it through even when the odds are against you. I'm only 20 but for a while i thought my dreams were flushed down the toilet because of choices I made..but GOD worked it out for ME!!! He can do the same for you too!!!!!

Go for it! I am in my early 50's and taking my prereq's for RN. I start the Nurse Assistance Course in a few months (I agree with Saysfaa about considering Nurse Assistant). So I will work parttime to gain experience and make a little money as a Nurse Assistant while getting my R.N. There are many different jobs that you will qualify for as an R.N. Go for it!! You can do it.

i was JUST thinking that...lol

My questions are,,if you know...the average salary and how long it takes to do this

also...i dont wish to sound crass or rude,,BUT,,will I be doing more than changing bedpans etc?

I keep going back to the CNA idea

a CNA to LPN to RN

my immediatte concern is for money NOW,...today...lol and i was thinking the Pharmacy etch may be shorter...but maybe not

the amount you make depends on where you work...her in upstate new york alot of them make around $8.5-14 it's just really depends on where you work at

I think they make roughly the same as pharmacy techs. The training is the equivelent of about 100 hours (it is a set number but I don't know it off the top of my head). My school offers a dozen or so ways of doing it. Over the past couple of years they have offered everything from all day one day per week for 15 weeks to all day four days per week for 3 weeks. There are choices of half days (morning, afternon, or evening) or all day for two or three days per week for however many weeks make enough hours.

The mostly baths and bedpans jobs are the easiest to find but there are cna jobs that involve little of that. My sister in law worked in a nicu (neonatal intensive care unit) as a cna. One of my physiology classmates works on a med-surg floor as a cna, most of the patients on her floor don't need bedpans or baths, she does mostly drinks of water, adjusting blankets, fetching things. I don't know how they found these jobs, though, or how likely it is that you would find one. I just met with the volunteer coordinator at a nearby hospital, she said she gets lots of volunteers who are really looking for jobs. She doesn't mind that but wishes people would tell her so she could direct them to areas that are likely to be hiring. Again, I don't know how typical that attitude is... there are a few threads about that in the main nursing sections -basically, don't be too blatently there only for the job, at least besides in the volunteer coordinator's office.

Edit to add, I don't know how much training pharmacy techs need... a cursorary google search said anything from only on the job training to 3 to 6 month courses.

Hi, I just turned 44 and working on prereq's for RN. Keep The Faith!!!!! You can do it!
