Hi all! I am 38, married, two (2) children, ages 15 and soon to be 13 (boys). I have my AAS Degree. I am currently a Corporate Paralegal. I just started doing CRNA's employment agreements three (3) years ago. Three (3) years ago I want to started nursing school and too be honest I was scared of "starting over". Now I am ready. I have a lot of prereqs., but I a fine with that. I start in Feb. My husband who is also my BEST FRIEND is extremely supportive and our children are amazing and supportive. I haven't mentioned it to one (1) person at work. When I am doing an employment agreement for one of the groups we represent I work directly with the Chief and President of Anesthesiology for surgical corp. He is affliated with major hospitals in my area. I know that he would be happy to know that he played a major role in regard to me wanting to become a CRNA. I haven't told him because he is one of my boss' clients. I was think about getting a job in a hospital, so that I could work until 3 or 4 the latest. Right now I have to work until 5:00pm and I cannot change my schedule not even for school. Back to my question. One (1) of my friends that I told said, that I was too old to begin and by the time I graduate with my RN degree I will be 41 at least. That is true I most likely will be 41 because I am going part-time. What do you think? I have prayed on it. God bless.
Dear AKANARN:
Too old? I am 51, I have a 21 year old daughter who just graduated from the same university I am attending, a 19 year old son, and an 8 year old daughter. I am a junior in a BSN program and I will be 53 when I graduate. I think you are in fine shape. Go for it. Study well, talk about your feelings, and get as many clinical experiences under your belt as you can. I was a paralegal too before this adventure (personal injury/medical malpractice, plaintiff and defense). With good support, you will be fine. Hope this helps.
I don't use an online name yet. Call me Jan.

You are not too old!!!! And when you start school you are going to see that you are really somewhere closer to the middle of the pack. But, regardless of that, what the nursing profession needs now, more than anything, are people who want to be nurses, in whatever capacity (CRNA, RN, NP, etc.). Nurses are a special breed and if you feel the calling to be a nurse and then a CRNA, more power to you. We, speaking for the nurses out there now, are glad to have anyone join our ranks...age is not a factor. (By the way, I'm 35 and in a Nurse Practitioner program and there are at least 10 people over 50 in my program!) GOOD LUCK!!!!

My husband finished his BSN at 43 and he's graduating CRNA school this year at 46. (And he's not the oldest in the class by any means).
He LOVES it. I'm just so glad to see him satisfied that I'm willing to do what has to be done for him.
It is tremendously hard and has been a sacrifice for us all - he can't work right now so money is tight. But our kids (14 and 16) know the investment will be worth it.
So I say GO FOR IT!

What a great role model for your kids. Working hard and following your dreams, isn't that what every parent wants for their child?
Heck NO! From my point of view, at 52, you're still practically a baby, and I just completed my masters in Nursing last October. I say, GO FOR IT, and best of luck to you!

You are absolutely NOT TOO OLD. I was an attorney for 22 years, and hated every minute. Did an ADN program so I could get out into the work world and never looked back. I will be 50 in may and am thinking about BSN and CRNA.You can do whatever you set your mind to, you go girl!!!!!!
I would love your input on this.
I am a 58 year old in CNA classes. When I finish the classes and CNA licensing, I will be working my way through LPN school, and then ADN. Today we had the school's placement coordinator visit our class, to help us with our resumes. I brought my most recent resume, to find out how to transform it into a resume suitable to get my first hospital CNA job. My back ground: Real Estate Broker, 10 years; Director of a laser and electrolysis skin care clinic, 3 years, with an MD, several RNs and technicians working for me. The placement coordinator said to me in front of the class,"Well, you can't send anything like that! They'll wonder what in the world you are trying to do!" I was so embarassed. :imbar I needed help to try to figure out how to present myself so that I would be considered for employment. How the heck did you present yourself as a former attorney? Help from anyone with this would be appreciated. :selfbonk: I need a job when I get out of school so that I can keep going to school.
What does the prez of the company you work for now have to do with you going for your goals or not? That's my first question. Go for it if you can. Your age has nothing to do with your goal. You may have to think about your time constraints, tho.... Second question: can you alter your time schedule for school/work? By the way, I graduated with my RN at 40.

Did I miss something? Where did attorney come into play? Can't say much about that coordinator, tho. Wrong attitude. You can do better, and I'm sure you will. Best of luck to you.
Hey, I started LVN school at 51 and graduated in one year with Honors! You can do it too. The difficult part will be time mgt. If your family lets you study, you should be fine. I would tell you "Good Luck", but as Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics said, "If you're good, you don't need to be lucky".Hi all!
