Hey everyone, I am an Oklahoma student wanting to move to Texas soon after graduation. I am having a hard time figuring out just what I should do. Should I take the NCLEX in oklahoma or texas? Can I take the NCLEX in Texas if I went to school in Oklahoma? From my understanding, if I take the NCLEX in Ok and try to get a license in Tx I may have to take some kind of refresher course.

Thanks in advance and I am sorry if the mods have to move my post.

You'll want to check the BON site for both states. From what I remember many years ago, as long as you recently went to and graduated from an accredited school, and take the NCLEX, you should be good in any state. There may be delays though in getting your NCLEX results and transcripts across state lines. Be warned, TX has a huge bunch of new grad nurses popping out each semester around the bigger cities, and your best job prospects are going to be on the coast or along the border. Both of which make north TX/Oklahoma heat seem like winter in comparison. :)

Ahh yes, the heat is BAD where I am going. I am planning to get married and move to the huntsville area asap after graduation. I will keep looking into both BON web sites, thank you :-)

I thought we had a compact with Oklahoma? I know I work with some nurses who commute in to DFW from Oklahoma, so hopefully you won't have any trouble practicing here. The Huntsville area is nice - smaller city but close enough to Houston to do some shopping! You may be able to get on with the prison as a new grad if that interests you :)

Good luck with the NCLEX and your wedding.

Since I attended an RN completion program in Oklahoma, I obtained my initial RN license in Oklahoma and was easily able to endorse into Texas last year. You will not have to complete a refresher course if you are a new grad.

You can also apply for initial licensure in Texas without ever getting an Oklahoma license. You will have to take a jurisprudence exam, but this is an open-book test with 50 very easy questions.

I took my NCLEX in the city and then I moved to Texas a year later. I know of some classmates who took their test in W.Falls. The pay here (TX) is sooo much better than Lawton! It is unreal. Good Luck to You! :nurse:
