Published

:paw:Right now,I am a prenursing student at the local college.FSCJ to be exact.Today,I started to wonder if I should change to be pre-med for vet school.I think my passion is for animals.I love being in the hospital setting with children but I don't think its "my thing".I'm only a frshman in college but I want to decide on my major.I thought my caliing was maternity nursing(in a dream).Any advice?I know this is a nursing forum but I just want opinions. The only problem with being a vet is euthanizing animals! Please help!!!Thanks

...you'd be pre-vet for vetmed, not pre-med. Just so you know.

I'm (probably) going to go through nursing school in order to get a job so I can take my pre-requisites for veterinary school. I'm not certain yet. So. Iunno. (Sorry for my disjointed post, I'm tired.) Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about pre-reqs and stuff for pre-vet. I've got tons of info.

My passion is animals too, but I could never be a vet nor vet tech. I can deal with people being hurt and in pain, but not animals.

I really wanted to be a wildlife biologist, but the reality with that field is that its a lot of school for few jobs. I bet I've seen every wildlife documentary ever made LOL. I've even been on a few safaris in southern Africa.

But my reality is that being a nurse will pay my bills and allow me to travel to pursue my passion for wildlife.

I'm guessing that you are young....go with your heart.

Yes,thats exactly how i feel.Im okay with people in pain, but seeing an animal hurt or anything almost makes me cry.And then if I'd have to euthanize one?I dont know what I'd do.And yes,I am young,I'm 18.Vet school totals 8 years and I need a steady job before then.Being a nurse will allow me to pay bills, and travel.I will be looking into travel nursing prior or upon graduating nursing school (:

Do you volunteer? I'd say go pre-vet or maybe Biology, but volunteer right now at a shelter. It's sad to put a lot of companion animals down, but it's usually so much better for them when they're sick. As a volunteer, you won't have to put animals down. And maybe you'll get some experience as to why it's so necessary.

I wanted to be a vet as well. I was attending Texas A&M and had plans to apply to vet school. THEN I volunteered at the animal shelter and I changed my mind really quick about the whole vet thing. I couldn't handle hurting animals or putting them to sleep. They don't understand that you have to hurt them to make them better. I also can't handle seeing animals injured, sick, or hurt. It broke my heart.

I decided to get my BS anyway since I was so close to finishing. It has now been 10 years and I just graduated from nursing school this month. I am really happy with my decision and I do not have a problem treating or inflicting pain on my human patients.

What you are going through right now is completely normal. Try volunteering at an animal shelter and try to set up a shadowing experience with a nurse. Only you can make this decision and you have to listen to your gut and heart. Good luck!
