OHSU's Accelerated BSN program 2012

Published

Hi! I live in Portland, OR and want to apply for OHSU's accelerated bachelor's program for nursing, but there isn't a lot of information out there on it. I've browsed their website, but it doesn't answer all the questions I have. I would love to know exactly what they judge you on in order to get in. I know your GPA and essays are extremely important, but do they care if you have had work history, or your CNA license or not? I don't have any experience, but have a 4.0 so far in my pre-reqs, and a 3.6 in my previous bachelor's degree (in a social work field). Anyway, I want to apply for the program to enter it in the summer of 2012, so I can finish up my pre-req's and what not. I am just wondering what else I need to do, because I really want in. Also, how much does it cost, and being accelerated, is it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, or what? I have two kids I'm going to need to find childcare for while I'm in school, so I just want to know what I'm in for. anyway, if you can help me answer any of these questions, I would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi all! Finally signing in after a month or so of lurking around this forum... for those people joining the summer cohort, can I pick your brains about financial aid? What kind of plans do you have? I was accepted into the summer cohort and was super excited about it but I was disappointed, nay, depressed, to get the letter from Financial Aid. The Stafford loans I'm eligible for ($1375 sub plus $1750 unsub per term) won't go very far AT ALL, and I have zero savings (and, yes, previous student debt on top of that). Baed on what I've heard about how intense the program is, I'm NOT planning on working while enrolled. I expected to have to go the private loan route to cover some costs, but the size of the loan I'd be looking at is terrifying. I would feel like a crazy person to pass up this opportunity, but at this point I'm really not sure.

Does anyone have some wisdom for me? Anyone?

Hey aprilshower.emma - thanks! Congrats to you too and everyone else who made the waitlist. It sounds like we should feel pretty good about getting that far, considering how competitive it is right now. I have 2 B+ out of 3 A&P classes at PSU (2 B+, 1 A), and didn't realize how much that would affect my GPA ranking with everyone having 4.0's. Have you applied to other programs? I am on the U.P. waiting list too. I just heard from OHSU-Monmouth and was accepted there for the 3 yr. program. The ABSN would be my top choice.

Hey Cinquefoil! It won't let me respond to your message. Apparently the admission's office closes at 12 on Monday so I'll be around before then. I would love to talk with a current student while I'm there. My email address is [email protected].

pdxrose--you already got your letter for the regular OHSU BSN program!? I'm so jealous! I have been waiting forever!

Hey Bugg, I'm on the waitlist so don't know anything about financial aid yet. Did they offer you nursing student loans? Were you supposed to be responsible for seeking out your own private loans? I'm a little concerned about this as well. I'm wondering if government student loan money is just drying up generally and everyone is going to have a hard time paying for school... My husband is likely to lose his job soon and so our 2011 1040 does not reflect what the future is going to be for us financially. It does seem crazy to pass up OHSU, but it is scary to take that kind of risk too. I don't know what I'll do should I be so fortunate as to be offered a spot.

Hello nursesarak,

Are you waitlisted the ABSN or the BSN program through OHSU? I am waitlisted for the ABSN and fortunately, I have received information through OHSU and FASFA regarding Private Loan lenders. Second degree programs are offered a variety of private loan options more than the traditional Unsub/Subidized Loans programs. Please feel free to contact me if I might shed a some light on what I have been told thus far on funding/loans.

hey happiness - yes I just received a packet 2 or 3 days ago in the mail. Way earlier than I was expecting too! I thought we had to wait until June or the end of May at least. which campus did you apply to?
