Hi! I live in Portland, OR and want to apply for OHSU's accelerated bachelor's program for nursing, but there isn't a lot of information out there on it. I've browsed their website, but it doesn't answer all the questions I have. I would love to know exactly what they judge you on in order to get in. I know your GPA and essays are extremely important, but do they care if you have had work history, or your CNA license or not? I don't have any experience, but have a 4.0 so far in my pre-reqs, and a 3.6 in my previous bachelor's degree (in a social work field). Anyway, I want to apply for the program to enter it in the summer of 2012, so I can finish up my pre-req's and what not. I am just wondering what else I need to do, because I really want in. Also, how much does it cost, and being accelerated, is it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, or what? I have two kids I'm going to need to find childcare for while I'm in school, so I just want to know what I'm in for. anyway, if you can help me answer any of these questions, I would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
----kewi5, AHhh i missed your post, sorry about that. I totally agree with you. I'm still working toward my first degree, so i don't have the time to volunteer/work regularly, but despite my limited experience in direct patient contact, I think i was able to clearly convey my understanding of what nurses do, the role of the nurse in health care, my motivations for this career, and how this preps me for OHSU by meaninfully relating to my non-clinical experiences. And my two GPAs are not at the 3.8 levels, so maybe the admissions committee also considers what else is going on in your life to assess how well you can handle a big load of commitments. HOpe this helps.
Now, I must get back to writing my ADHD review paper for my genetics class!
For those interested, I think I am probably on the low end of GPAs of accepted students: 3.52 for my first degree in Biochem and 4.0 for pre-reqs, including some 400 level course work but at the time AP3, Micro and Stats were still unfinished.
I'm 31 and have had a successful career before this so my essay was a lot about my life experiences, specifically focusing a lot around living and working in Japan when the big earthquake and tsunami hit last year and how I wanted to have the skills to respond to disasters like that. I'm glad that for the $120 application fee they actually take the time to read the essays well!
Additionally, I'm guessing there may have been right and wrong answers regarding the question about the pregnant woman who smoked. I talked about focusing on listening to her reasons for her choices, using NVC (NonViolent Communication) to better understand her choices and communicate their potential ramifications and most importantly to create an environment where she felt comfortable returning to for continued care.
Feel free to PM me if you want more details or want to read my essay. My strategy for writing it was to write about 10 pages and cut it into two, being sure to create a story that was memorable. If I didn't get in this round my strategy was to go do something amazing to be sure to stand out in the next round (Medical volunteer in Guatemala was the plan. Though, now that I'm in the Fall cohort rather than the summer I still may be able to!)
Good luck to the rest of you!
It doesn't appear that anyone has started a Facebook group for the incoming summer/fall cohort. I would do it but I don't feel like I have the skills to successfully execute the creation of such a page. Is anyone here good with Facebook that would like to create a group to help facilitate conversation between all of us? Many thanks in advance.
Alright, I think this is the link:
e: And if that doesn't work that is the name of the group so you should be able to search it. :)

Looks like mail has reached the Seattle-Tacoma area, I received my acceptance packet today! Wow, can't believe this is really happening, looking forward to moving down to Porland. And looking forward to meeting everyone, ohmygoodness, midwife22, rmfnursing, tigerlogic, zeebee, and anyone else i may have missed. I don't have that PM option yet, how are you connecting with each other? Does OHSU provide its own forum for our cohort? Is tehre a facebook page set up?
And thanks for the tips on house hunting everyone. I don't know much about the Portland neighborhoods and I don't know anyone who lives in pOrtland, so the info on rental prices/transportation has been very helpful. You folks are just awesome!
Gluck to all of you!
