OHSU's Accelerated BSN 2015 cohort

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi there everyone. I didn't see a thread started yet, so I thought I would start one.

I am applying for the 2015 Accelerated BSN cohort (Portland campus) and am very nervous about the whole process with Nursing CAS and having transcripts sent to them.

I am also curious if anyone out there has an idea of what they are looking for and who will get interviews? It makes me nervous that there is no essay, so I assume that interviews will be based on grades alone. I have an undergraduate degree in Art History with a 3.64 GPA and a prereq GPA of 3.76 from PCC. Does anyone know if I even stand a chance? I have taken all of the prerequisites except for Micro, which I plan on taking in the winter.

It sounds like the interviews and no essays is a new thing? Does anyone know? Here's to hoping I at least get an interview!

Hey curlygrl. Yeah, I was confused with the short essay question thing, but I figured it was for some sort of compliance/EEOC type of thing and that it wouldn't play a huge role in my application. I filled it out as best I could. Personally, I didn't feel like I had a whole lot to say, but that could be a negative in my application. I will be curious to find out if anyone was able to make the document work though!

katgreen,

That is a great point, I did notice that it costs more. My thought is that OHSU is such a great school it would still be worth it, but it certainly would be amazing to get into the ABSN. At the information session they mentioned if you have a bachelors already but attend the 3 year program the work load is really more like part-time. So my consolation is that there would be more time to work during the program, unlike the ABSN.

Here's hoping you get into your dream school! :)

I'm with you! 3 more years of school is tooo looooong. I'm also applying to CCC, PCC, and MHCC. OHSU is the only "big" school I'm applying to. Does UP have an accelerated BSN program??

Hey Katgreen,

I've gotten about as far as what you're saying. I've tried cutting and pasting, and just typing it in. I definitely need more than 2 lines for my response though!! I emailed the nursing program and this was her reply...

"You can respond to the questions on a word document. However, please create one complete file for upload that includes the supplemental questionnaire and your responses."

I don't feel like that was very helpful. Boo. Any other ideas out there?

Hey Immccauley - I don't have much to put on that page either except for ONE of the short essays, which of course I can't write more than 2 measly lines. Ugh. I'm still fiddling with adobe. We'll see...

curlygrl,

UP doesn't have an accelerated program, but their program is considered the Jr and Sr year - 5 semesters long - transfers start in January and finish in September the following year. So it is actually slightly less than 2 years long.

mwpdx,

Thanks for the info! At this point, that would probably mean I'd be applying to start January 2016...right? Ideally, I'd like to start school either summer or fall 2015.

I don't know what alternate universe they were in at the information session to have described the 3-year work-load as "part-time". I had a previous bachelors (as did most of my classmates) and there is no way that the 3-year program can be described as part-time, except for the fact that you get the summers off. I used the summers off to take microbiology, stats, and to work as a CNA II at OHSU to improve my chances of getting a nursing job as a new grad. It is possible to work part time while doing the 3-year program, but it's no picnic. I worked .75 for the last year while I was in the program and it was a nightmare. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the 3-year program is a part time program. It will, however, give you a lot more clinical time and more preparation in a hospital setting than the accelerated program, so if that is what you are looking for, consider it.

Hi matsalleh,

Thanks for your input, that is very helpful! I was just talking to a friend from OHSU and she had the same thoughts about the work load being intense whether you do the 3 year or the ABSN. I guess when they said "part time" they must have meant that you dont have to take Summer classes if you have Micro and Stat's completed, etc. It is good to hear from a real student perspective, though! I was wondering about the limited clinical time in the ABSN, and it seems like having summers to work as a CNA could really be a benefit. Did it end up helping you find a job as a new grad?

Hi everyone! I'm planning on applying to the ABSN in Portland. I currently live in Illinois. I'm thinking about applying to the ABSN to MSN as well, as I already am taking the GRE for another application.

I see a couple of you mentioned no essays... I thought that essays were one of the supplemental documents we upload to NCAS? But now I'm seeing it is for the Ashland campus only. Eek! So, just to clarify to those that attended the info session... ABSN applicants to the Portland program don't upload essays?

Hey Rrs14,

Yes, from what I can tell, there are no essays for the ABSN-Portland applicants. The only items I uploaded were the Supplemental Application, Coursework Form, and a document I put together with course descriptions since my courses were out of state. Other than that, it looks like they just go off of GPA! Somebody please correct me if I am wrong!

Few schools make their application process unnecessarily complicated. OHSU is one of them.
