Well my letter from OHSU finally came. I have been put on the alternate list. I guess that is better than getting a rejection letter but I have no idea what my chances of being moved up to being accepted are. I am just wondering if there are any other prospective or even current OHSU students out there who know what my chances are. Are there any of you who got an acceptance letter but are planning on not attending OHSU? (that would definitely increase my chances of getting in.)
I have specified that OHSU's new program out at Western Oregon University in Monmouth is my first pick, as I am from Salem, but I have also checked that I would consider the Portland campus as well...
I have also applied at Chemeketa Community College (ADN program) but will probably not hear back until the end of June.
I am just making myself a bit crazy trying to plan for the fall without really knowing what my life will look like then...

Hi,
Not sure about OHSU, but I have also applied to Chemeketa and we should be getting letters by the end of next week. Good Luck!

Hello, I was also put on the alternate list for OHSU. I will not be attending OHSU (I was accepted to Mt. hood so far) however, so that is one less alternate. Good luck!

I received my letter yesterday...I was accepted to the OHSU program in Monmouth, but I won't be attending there. That will open up one alternate spot for someone.:)
Good luck!

Have you tried calling OHSU to find out where you are on the alternate list? They won't tell you your exact number, but will give you a general idea of where you are on the list. Don't give up hope though! I just graduated from OHSU 3 days ago (yay!) and there were people in my class who were alternates. I also think that OHSU has made a HUGE mistake waiting until June to send out their letters. However, I think this may increase your chances of getting an alternate spot because a lot of people are not going to risk losing thier place at another school by waiting around for OHSU! The reason they changed their date is because of OCNE, and let's just say i'm not a fan of OCNE. Luckily I was in the last batch of the 2 year program!
Just Graduated... Wow, what an awesome accomplishment you have made! Congratulations! Where are you planning on working at? Have you been happy with your OHSU nursing school experience?
Yes, I have tried to squeeze out some info from OHSU. When I called them they wouldn't tell me what number alternate I was, nor would they say how many alternates they had chosen.... I didn't push it much further than that.
I have to trust that if going to OHSU is supposed to be where I go then it will all work out. In some ways there are benefits to going to Chemeketa (if I were to get in there instead, although their letters aren't out yet). I would come out of their ADN program as an RN and ready to work a year earlier than with OHSU. A $60,000+ worth of salary for that year is quite a benefit of going the ADN program route. I would then be earning my RN to BSN while I am working. Financially speaking it makes sense to NOT pursue OHSU but my heart says otherwise. (Have I convinced any of you OHSU-Monmouth prospects to pass up your spot yet?) I have been served by OHSU with my own life on one occasion and then with the life of my extremely premature daughter, so for several personal reasons, I would really like to attend OHSU.
I am curious how many OHSU-Monmouth alternates will actually get calls for admittance. Unlike the OHSU-Portland applicants, there are not any other BSN programs in the general Monmouth/Corvallis/Salem area. So I am not sure if many of the 27 accepted applicants will pursue other acceptances. Although according to another posting on this thread there is at least one accepted applicant doing just that...
So I guess time will tell. Best of luck to all of you out there who are also playing the waiting-game along with me over the next several weeks and months.
Yes, I am happy with my education for the most part (I didn't like my community health lecture). I loved the clinicals, and because OHSU is a teaching hospital, I was able to see some things or take care of pts that I never would have gotten to at another hospital. The one downside to OHSU is thier administration (as I'm sure you are already aware of)! They are a bit slow at processing paperwork and tend to wait until the last minute to tell you things. I've heard that as a complaint from many nursing schools though.
There's nothing wrong with getting your ADN first and then getting your BSN, but remember that Bachelor prepared nurses are typically seen as more competitive in the job market and a lot of hospitals really want you to have that BSN. I also don't know how rigorous the RN to BSN program is and how much you would be able to work during that year.
Just some things to consider....Good Luck!!

It's also worth considering that once you're employed as an RN, most, if not all larger employers will pay for you to get your BSN (most likely just part of it, but it depends on many factors).
That's primarily why I chose the ADN route first. It's much cheaper (I already have student loans from my undergrad degree) and I can go on to get my BSN once I'm employed as a nurse and let my employer pitch in for some of it.

I will be going to the Monmouth campus in the fall. Would love to hear from anyone that will be going there as well.
