Hi everyone!
Wanted to get this topic started since I cannot find much recent information for this program on this site. Starting my application process for OHSU CRNA for 2018 start year. Wanted to know if there was anyone else out there applying for this program and if you had any advice or information to give on what they are looking for or their interview process?
Thanks!!
Kirsten :)
Yeah they said they were hoping to notify us today (the 12th) but it sounded like this wasn't absolutely concrete by the tone. I thought the interview was pretty intense; I don't feel great about how I interviewed and felt pretty rattled afterward. I let the intimidation of sitting in front of 12 CRNA's get the best of me and blanked on questions that I knew I should have been able to answer (later, I woke up in the middle of the night and only then was able to articulate what I meant to say in the interview....ugh..). It's hard to know what they are looking for specifically when the competition is so high (class of 9 students and it sounds like at least 50 interviews) but I'm guessing it's utter perfection. I'm just hoping I did well enough on the written part to compensate for my clinical question fumbling.
I guess I spoke too soon, because I got a call yesterday evening around 6:30 from the program director. I got in and I cannot believe it! Good luck to you guys, I hope you get in as well! Don't give up hope yet if you haven't heard, I think it's pretty common for people to apply to several of the west coast schools and rescind their invitations to one or another.
Congrats, you two! I didn't get a call, so I'm assuming that's a no. I'm disappointed, but it's okay. It's the first school I applied to and was surprised to even get the interview. It gave me practice though. We flew cross country for it, but it was a good opportunity and a nice trip with my wife (without our kids-hah)... trying to look at the bright side. Haha.
I'm applying to a few more schools in the next few months, so we'll see what happens! I'm happy for you guys!
Received a call yesterday in the eve as well. I was going to work and could barely concentrate on my work. Very happy to get a spot on this particular program. Of all 5 sch I applied, OHSU is my number 1 choice. The faculty and school atmosphere seems very supportive - Portland: perfect.
For those that did not get a spot, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay hopeful. The difference between admits and those that don't get spots is minimal with sheer luck too, we are all qualified Candidates if you got an interview (in my opinion). So stay at it, many candidates will have to pick btwn 2 program. So spots will definitely open up in 1-2 month all across the west coast.
Last word: don't practice interviews too much on personal questions, they want to connect with your everyday you. Not the practiced perfect version of you so... practicing too much takes away who you really are and makes you abit cookie cutter.
Best of luck to all my peeps.
I absolutely agree with all of what you said, CRNAdreaming. The interview part I've heard this is especially true of Samuel Merritt (and probably most the west coast schools). I would encourage people that are interested in OHSU to strongly consider also applying to Samuel Merritt. It is expensive and Oakland/Bay area is expensive but so is Portland and OHSU. That being said their class size is larger (30 or 35 people I think) and they interview around 60 candidates from what I hear so the odds of admission are better if you land an interview. They have hands down one of the best clinical experiences in the country (with only light area travel around northern California) and they have an outstanding reputation for keeping their students very happy. Just my 2 cents.
To everyone that does get in this year, congratulations and I look forward to meeting you guys!
